BMW Motorrad’s GS range of adventure bikes is known for being capable off-roaders. The G310 GS used to be the entry point to the lineup, with a last-recorded ex-showroom price of Rs 3.83 lakh. Despite being powered by a small-capacity engine, it doesn’t lose out on the ADV character. The G310 GS was first launched in India in 2018. Ever since its market debut, BMW’s 310 range was infamous for its relatively high ownership cost. Now, a video shared by an owner has exposed the hefty service costs that the G310 GS attracts. The clip shared by Prateek Chaturvedi (mysticriderprateek on Instagram) reveals that he had to spend Rs 1.2 lakh for two services of the motorcycle!

As the video opens, the host says that the service costs of BMW motorcycles have shot up so high that it has become more difficult to own a BMW motorcycle than to buy one. He further says that the previous service at BMW Delhi cost him over Rs 48,000.

Before that, he had to spend over Rs 72,000 on another service, before setting out on a ride to UK and Europe. This means that he had to spend around 1.2 lakh rupees for servicing his 310cc motorcycle in a year! Insanely expensive.

Prateek further says that in the two services mentioned above, the labour charge alone amounted to over Rs 40,000! He then gives a detailed breakdown. The labour charge for draining coolant and a clutch cable replacement stood at Rs 1500, and that for changing front fork oil was Rs 3500.

The motorcycle’s throttle cable costs Rs 450, but the installations would require a labour charge of Rs 1400. The video even shows photographs of the respective invoices, to further substantiate the claims.

Prateek then says that he had to replace these parts, and spend so much on service after riding through the well-built European road. This also means that the motorcycles riding through the poorly built Indian roads might have to spend even more in repairs and services.

To give the viewers more context, Prateek even says that with the money he spent as labour charges, he could have done four full services of a KTM Adventure.

From the video’s description, we also get to learn that the two ‘expensive services’ mentioned above, came after the bike completed 50,000 and 80,000 kms respectively. This owner is extremely unhappy with the experience.

The video has been racking up views online. At the time of writing this story, it has had over 5.5 lakh views. In the comments section, we see a few other owners voicing similar concerns as well. Prateek, in a comment, also mentioned that initially, a service used to cost him around Rs 8000-10,000. But after completing 50,000 km, the costs increased to about Rs 25,000 per service.

BMW, in fact, discontinued the G310 GS in January this year. The replacement is likely to be the F450 GS expected to arrive early next year. The G310 GS used to come with the same 310cc engine found in the G310 R naked. It used to make 33.5 hp and 28Nm.

The adventure bike had upside-down forks, rear monoshock, and safety equipment like ABS. It came with 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels, shod with dual-sport tyres. The Royal Enfield Himalayan and KTM 250 Adventure were its prime rivals in the Indian market.
