In most metro cities, people rely heavily on cab aggregators to commute from home to work and back. During office hours, traffic congestion is common, and people have started coming up with new solutions to avoid getting stuck in traffic. They often opt for bike taxis from Ola, Uber, or Rapido as they are cheaper and often reach the destination in less time than a regular cab.

However, not everyone has a good experience with such bike taxis. Recently, a LinkedIn post went viral where a pillion rider or passenger on an Ola bike taxi ended up with a fractured arm after the Ola bike taxi rider rode recklessly and caused an accident.

The post was shared by Pratyush Singh on LinkedIn. It mentions that his colleague recently met with an accident while traveling in an Ola bike taxi. The reason for the accident was the negligent riding by the rider.

The accident left her with a fractured left arm, and she had to undergo multiple surgeries. Because of someone else’s negligence, Siddhi Vijayvargia (the victim) had to spend Rs 3 lakh on medical expenses.

The reason this incident was posted on social media is significant. After the crash, Ola had promised the victim assistance and also told her that they would reimburse the amount she spent on medical expenses.

The accident happened months ago, and even today, she has not received any assistance. The post mentions that Ola has been giving vague responses, delaying the process, and ignoring the requests. The person who posted the story mentioned that this isn’t just about money. Ola Cabs should have shown basic human decency, and by delaying and ignoring the requests, they have lost trust.

He even raises a question in the post and asks Ola and Bhavish Aggarwal about this attitude. He asks: Is this how they treat victims of their riders’ negligence? Where’s the support? Where’s the responsibility?

He also adds that Siddhi didn’t ask for this trauma, and she is now forced to fight for what should’ve been automatically extended to her — support, care, and rightful reimbursement.

Bike taxi riders recklessly riding through city roads is a common sight in many cities. These bike taxis pose safety concerns, and many state governments have actually banned them in the past. Apart from safety concerns, some states have banned Rapido, Ola, and Uber bike taxis because of legal disputes and varying regulations across states regarding bike taxi services.

This confusion was later put to rest by a central government notification clarifying the legal status of bike taxis under the Motor Vehicles Act (MV Act). The advisory defines bike taxis as contract carriages, allowing their operation across the country.

However, this doesn’t give them the right to ride recklessly on the road. The bike taxi or cab aggregators should take necessary steps to ensure that such accidents do not happen in the future. We also hope that Ola Cabs gets back to the victim, Siddhi Vijayvargia, and resolves this issue soon.
