In India and around the world, accidents happen almost every day. Carelessness is the major cause of most accidents in India. However, there are instances where we have seen accidents occur on the road due to lack of attention by authorities as well. Here we have one such video from Uttar Pradesh where a person reversed his scooter and fell into an open drain. Both the scooter and the rider fell into the deep drain and were later rescued by the locals.

The video has been shared by India Official on their Instagram page. The accident happened in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad. The exact location is mentioned in the video and as per the information available, this happened in Indirapuram’s Gaur Green City market.

The video was captured on CCTV installed outside the market. In this video, we see a young rider coming and picking up his scooter from the parking spot. In fact, the scooter was parked on a section built above the drain. The drain was open at multiple spots and it looks like it had been unattended for quite some time.

Municipal authorities who are in charge of drain cleaning often leave such large drains open or break parts of the pavement to make their work easier while cleaning. We assume the drain was left open for some time now. They might have opened it during the recent heavy rains to ensure there was no waterlogging on the road.

The rider came, sat on the scooter, started it, and began reversing while looking back. As he was about to reach the road, he turned the handlebar and continued reversing. He didn’t realise that he was too close to the drain.

He might have seen it, but probably didn’t realise he was reversing into the drain. Within seconds, the rear wheel of the scooter fell into the drain and the rider immediately lost control. The scooter was still on and we can see him try his best to bring it back onto the road. All his efforts were in vain and in no time, both he and the scooter fell into the drain.

The report mentions that two children who were nearby spotted the scooter falling into the drain. They called the locals and helped him come out. We can see that the locals offered him a bamboo ladder to climb up from the drain. He had fallen at least 10 feet below road level. Thankfully, he was wearing a helmet and didn’t hit his head on the concrete while falling down.

The video doesn’t show how they pulled the scooter out of the drain. We assume they might have called a crane to do the same.

The report also mentions that the drain has been left uncovered like this for a while now. Despite repeated requests to the authorities to close it, there has been no response. After this accident, the locals are now demanding urgent action from the municipal authorities to avoid future accidents.

The rider too should have been a lot more careful while reversing the scooter. He only checked one side while going back. He was trying to avoid the cars parked on the road and, in a bid to do so, he reversed into the drain.
