2025 Yamaha FZ-S Fi Launched: Subtle Tweaks, Familiar Formula

2025 Yamaha FZ-S Fi Launched: Subtle Tweaks, Familiar Formula
A mild refresh for Yamaha’s popular 150cc commuter bike brings new colours, cleaner emissions, and a small price bump—without changing what makes it a reliable everyday ride.
Yamaha has rolled out the 2025 version of its popular FZ-S Fi in India, priced at ₹1.35 lakh (ex-showroom). While the changes may not be revolutionary, the new model brings in cleaner emissions compliance, a couple of fresh design touches, and a slightly higher price tag—up by ₹3,600 compared to the outgoing version. Interestingly, the older model continues to remain on sale, giving buyers a clear choice between a more affordable variant and the updated one with minor feature upgrades.
Design Refresh: New Colours and Cleaner Lines
At first glance, not much has changed. But look closer, and you’ll spot the most noticeable tweak—the turn indicators have now moved from the headlight cluster to the tank shrouds. This subtle shift gives the front end a neater, less cluttered look. Beyond that, Yamaha has added two new colour options: a Matte Black with grey accents and a Metallic Grey with eye-catching neon highlights. These additions join the existing palette that includes popular shades like Ice Fluo-Vermillion and Cyber Green, offering a slightly broader range for buyers who like a bit of personalisation.
The bike retains its LCD instrument cluster, which continues to support Yamaha’s Y-Connect app. This connectivity feature enables call and SMS alerts, along with handy maintenance reminders—useful for everyday riders who like to stay on top of service schedules.
Mechanical Updates: Clean and Compliant
Mechanically, the biggest update is under the skin. The 149cc, air-cooled engine now complies with the latest Bharat Stage 6.2 norms, thanks to the inclusion of OBD-2B compliance. Power and torque figures remain unchanged at 12.4hp and 13.3Nm, respectively. The 5-speed gearbox continues as is, and the overall kerb weight has gone up by just 1kg.
Real-world performance, especially in urban environments, remains predictable and commuter-friendly. Mileage figures are still around the 48-50 kmpl mark, making it a practical option for daily use. Suspension and braking hardware—telescopic front forks, rear monoshock, and disc brakes at both ends—carry over unchanged.
The Dual-Variant Strategy: Something for Everyone
In a strategic move, Yamaha is offering both the new and older versions of the FZ-S Fi simultaneously. The updated model comes with new colours and stricter emissions compliance, while the older version—priced at ₹1.31 lakh—lacks the new emission tech but remains a more affordable alternative.
This dual-model strategy seems designed to appeal to different types of buyers. Those who prioritise budget and are less concerned with the latest updates can still opt for the older variant, while buyers looking for a slightly fresher feel and future-ready compliance can choose the 2025 version.
Competition Check: A Crowded Segment
The 150-160cc segment is among the most competitive in the Indian two-wheeler market. Yamaha’s updated FZ-S Fi faces stiff competition from bikes like the Bajaj Pulsar N160, TVS Apache RTR 160 4V, and Honda Unicorn. While rivals may offer more power or features like ride modes, LED lighting, or dual-channel ABS, the FZ-S banks on its proven track record, ease of ownership, and brand reputation.
Buyers looking for a bit more excitement may find the Yamaha slightly underwhelming in comparison, especially when features like gear position indicators or dual-channel ABS are missing. That said, its strong after-sales network—especially through Yamaha’s Blue Square outlets—remains a solid advantage.
Who Should Buy It?
The FZ-S Fi continues to cater to urban commuters who want a reliable, fuel-efficient motorcycle that’s easy to live with. Its upright seating position, smooth power delivery, and low maintenance requirements make it a sensible pick for city use and occasional highway runs. For riders who prioritise comfort, efficiency, and brand trust over sheer performance or gadgetry, the FZ-S Fi still ticks the right boxes.
However, those looking for a more feature-rich or dynamically exciting ride might be better served by alternatives from TVS or Bajaj, which offer more performance-oriented packages at a similar price.
What’s Next for Yamaha?
At the recent Auto Expo 2025, Yamaha showcased a more ambitious version of the FZ-S—an upcoming hybrid model featuring a TFT display and mild-hybrid assistance. While there's no official word yet on when this model will make it to showrooms, it suggests Yamaha is working on expanding the appeal of its commuter segment with newer tech in the future.
For now, though, the 2025 FZ-S Fi update is more of a regulatory refresh than a comprehensive upgrade. It keeps Yamaha in the game in the face of tightening emissions rules and growing competition, while continuing to offer what many Indian riders value most—dependability and peace of mind.
