Bajaj Chetak Crosses 500,000 Sales Milestone

The Bajaj Chetak electric scooter has crossed 510,000 units in cumulative sales since its relaunch in January 2020. The scooter took nearly four years to hit its first 100,000 units, but growth has accelerated sharply in the past year, showing how legacy players are now catching up in India’s EV space.

Rapid Acceleration in Sales

Of the 510,007 units sold to date, 206,366 were delivered in just 10 months leading up to September 2024 - 40 percent of total volumes. Since April 2024, Bajaj has dispatched 348,251 units, with the last 200,000 achieved in under 10 months. From an average of a few thousand units a month in its early phase, the Chetak is now consistently selling above 20,000 units monthly.

Variants, Pricing, and Service Reach

The Chetak is offered in four variants. The base 3001 runs on a 3 kWh battery, while the 3501, 3502, and 3503 carry larger 3.5 kWh packs. Prices range from ₹99,900 to ₹1.35 lakh ex-showroom, placing it across both entry-level and mid-range EV segments.

Bajaj’s service network of 3,800+ outlets nationwide gives it an advantage over younger EV start-ups. For buyers in tier-two and tier-three cities, service reach often decides brand choice, and this network strength has supported the Chetak’s rapid growth.

Market Share and Rankings

The overall electric scooter market has become highly competitive. Ola Electric still leads in monthly sales, but ICE-era manufacturers like Bajaj and TVS are closing the gap. Bajaj, with over half a million Chetak units sold, now sits firmly among the top three EV two-wheeler makers.

TVS has also scaled up with its iQube, crossing the 400,000 sales mark. Ather Energy remains strong in the premium segment but has been overtaken in volumes by Bajaj and TVS. Together, Bajaj and TVS now account for a growing share of the EV market, leveraging their manufacturing scale and dealer networks to challenge start-up dominance.

Catching Up With Start-Ups

The Chetak’s milestone shows that legacy ICE makers are no longer lagging in the EV race. Government incentives, rising fuel prices, and familiarity with trusted brands have helped them pull ahead in market share. Ola remains the single biggest player, but Bajaj and TVS are expanding faster than smaller start-ups, shifting the balance of the EV market.

From 100,000 units in 46 months to 200,000 units in under 10 months, the Chetak’s growth curve mirrors the EV market’s transition from early adoption to mass uptake. Bajaj’s scale, product range, and network strength are allowing it to convert ICE buyers to EVs more effectively than before.

Bajaj crossing the 500,000 mark shows how quickly the market is tilting. Once led by start-ups, the EV scooter segment is now being reshaped by established ICE manufacturers who are applying their scale and reach to close the gap.
