Fake Number Plate To Beat Traffic Fines? 1,200 Bikes Seized In Bengaluru

Today, if a vehicle is found in violation of any traffic rule, the owners are served with traffic challans. However, in order to avoid them, many people in Bengaluru were using fake and foldable number plates. To combat this issue, Bengaluru City Police recently conducted a crackdown on such owners and managed to seize over 1,200 two-wheelers, including bikes and scooters. These vehicles were found with fake and foldable number plates.
Bengaluru City Police Commissioner B. Dayananda recently conducted a city-wide crackdown on two-wheelers using fake number plates. The police checks took place during nighttime across multiple police stations. The officers were instructed to verify the registration details of the vehicles that were stopped.
As a result of this crackdown, the authorities managed to seize over 1,200 two-wheelers within seven days. The authorities are still conducting these checks, and more vehicles are being caught in violation of traffic rules. So far, the authorities have booked 43 vehicle owners and are filing FIRs against them under charges of cheating.
It has been reported by the police authorities that a number of riders caught in violation were using plates manufactured with deliberately false registration numbers. They added that these numbers on the vehicles did not match the registration details found by the authorities during checks. Also, in many cases, these numbers belonged to other vehicles.
Additionally, a lot of people were also using foldable number plates. For those who may not be aware, many people sell such plates and plate holders that are engineered to fold or flip so the number on the plates is not visible to the authorities. These plates also help in evading high-speed cameras.
Some vehicles were also caught with only one number plate, either on the front or the rear. This is done to make it difficult for automated cameras to capture the plates. In addition to this, some vehicle owners were caught using disfigured and stylized plates where numbers were written as letters.
Lastly, one of the more expensive but common ways of evading traffic fines is by using automatic cover plates. These specially designed plates have black covers that get deployed at the click of a button on a remote. This hides the actual number plate, and the Automatic Number Plate Recognition systems are unable to capture them, saving the vehicles from getting challans.
Currently, the crackdown has not been stopped, and more violators are being caught and their vehicles seized. The authorities are also focusing on stopping vehicles during hours when riders can easily evade them. Police authorities are now flagging suspected registration numbers against central databases.
This will help them in spotting forged or mismatched entries quickly during roadside checks. Most likely, this crackdown will warn other vehicle owners across the city and state, as in the future, the police authorities will conduct even more elaborate checks as people come up with new ways of evading traffic challans.
