Bengaluru Man Busted After Internet Calls Him Out For Accumulating Rs. 1.61 Lakh In Traffic Fines

In most metro cities, the police have installed surveillance cameras to monitor traffic and keep a check on traffic violations. This has helped the department with better management of personnel. In most cases, surveillance cameras issue fines whenever they spot a traffic violation. While most people pay the fines in a timely manner, there are a few who don’t. Not only do they not pay the fines, but they also continue to repeat the mistakes. Here, we have one such incident from Bengaluru, where a scooter rider accumulated fines worth ₹1.61 lakh.
The video has been shared by Karnataka Police on their X profile. The image circulating online shows a Yamaha Fascino rider on a busy road without a helmet.
The registration number and the rider’s face are clearly visible in the picture. The reason the image went viral is that someone looked up the number of fines against the vehicle and was shocked by the results.
The scooter seen in the image is worth ₹80,000. However, it has accumulated fines worth ₹1.61 lakh in the past year. Despite so many fines against the vehicle, the cops had not taken any action against the rider. The rider was often stopped by the police for violations, but they never checked the history. They simply issued challans and asked the rider to pay.
However, after the image and social media post went viral, Bengaluru Traffic Police took action in this matter. They located the rider and seized the vehicle. Reports surfacing online mention that the scooter was used by a person named Periyaswamy, a travel agent working in the Kalasipalya region. The scooter was used by Periyaswamy and his relative, Sudeep.
In most cases, fines were issued because they were spotted riding the scooter without a helmet. They were also seen speaking on the phone while riding and stopping on pedestrian crossings while waiting at signals. The owner of the scooter claimed that they were unaware of the fines, and Periyaswamy was shaken when he heard that his scooter had fines worth ₹1.61 lakh.
He and his relative, Sudeep, were ready to pay the amount but requested time. They even asked officers to collect a few thousand rupees as a partial fine and allow them to arrange the rest of the amount. However, the cops didn’t approve of this and seized the scooter.
In many cases, when the fine amount is more than the cost of the vehicle, people tend to abandon the vehicle at the police station. This is not the right approach, as it leads to more complications. The police can always register another case for non-payment of fines, which would only worsen the situation.
Riding a scooter or any two-wheeler in India without a helmet is illegal, and the cops can issue a challan in such cases. A helmet will not only save you from fines but also protect your head from injuries in case of an accident. In India, most people wear helmets not because they are concerned about safety, but because they are afraid of the cops.
