Hero MotoCorp is gearing up to expand its electric mobility portfolio with the launch of the new Vida Z electric scooter, slated to arrive on 1st July 2025. The upcoming model will sit below the current Vida V1 range and is set to become the most affordable electric two-wheeler from Hero’s EV division.

With the mainstream scooter market seeing heightened competition and price sensitivity, this move could help Hero gain a stronger foothold in the budget EV space.

Positioned Below the Vida V1

The Vida Z is expected to be positioned as a more accessible alternative to the existing Vida V1 Plus and V1 Pro models, which are priced between ₹1.15 lakh and ₹1.45 lakh (ex-showroom). While official pricing has not been revealed yet, sources suggest that the Vida Z could carry a sticker price close to ₹1 lakh or lower, depending on the configuration and applicable subsidies.

Hero has already begun dealership-level training and preparations for the rollout, indicating that the product is in the final stages of readiness. Reports suggest that test production has already begun at the company’s Chittoor facility in Andhra Pradesh, with a nationwide launch plan in place.

What Will It Look Like?

While Hero has not officially unveiled the design, leaked patent sketches and camouflaged test mules hint at a form factor similar to the current Vida V1, albeit with cost-saving design tweaks. Expect a more minimalistic front apron, simpler lighting elements, and fewer colour options. The rear grab rail and side panels could also feature a toned-down finish to keep production costs in check.

Despite these cost optimisations, Hero is unlikely to compromise on key safety and convenience features. LED lighting, a digital display, connected features, and regenerative braking are expected to remain part of the package, although the touchscreen and swappable battery may be left out to differentiate it from the pricier V1.

Battery and Performance Expectations

The Vida Z is likely to use a fixed battery pack, unlike the swappable units on the V1. This change not only reduces complexity and cost but also reflects a more commuter-focused approach. The battery capacity is expected to be smaller, with a real-world range of around 80 to 90 kilometres on a single charge, making it ideal for daily urban use.

Performance will be tuned accordingly, with a motor output estimated at under 4 kW. The scooter will still offer decent acceleration for city commuting, but it may not match the quicker throttle response of its elder siblings. Charging times are expected to be slightly longer without fast-charging capabilities, but home charging support should remain standard.

Rivals in the Sub-₹1 Lakh Segment

With its price positioning and focus on practicality, the Vida Z will go head-to-head with a growing list of affordable electric scooters already available in the market. These include the Ola S1 X, TVS iQube 2.2kWh variant, Bajaj Chetak Urbane, and the base variants from brands like Ather and Bounce.

Several of these rivals already have a presence in the sub-₹1 lakh zone after factoring in FAME-II and state-level subsidies. Hero’s challenge will be to offer a well-rounded product that does not feel stripped down, while also using its strong dealership and service network to build customer trust, something many newer brands are still working on.

An Important Launch for Hero

Hero MotoCorp has been relatively conservative in its EV rollout, especially compared to rivals like Ola Electric, Ather Energy, and TVS. However, the company appears to be adjusting its strategy by targeting a broader range of consumers. With the Vida Z, Hero is taking aim at the volume segment of the electric scooter market, which is currently dominated by more affordable offerings.

This move is also part of a broader EV plan from Hero. The company is expected to introduce another new Vida electric scooter by the end of the year. That model, likely to be a more feature-rich version aimed at mid-premium buyers, could help cover both ends of the EV spectrum and strengthen Hero’s overall portfolio.

What We Think

The July launch of the Vida Z could prove crucial for Hero’s electric ambitions. With high initial costs still acting as a barrier for many potential EV users, a sub-₹1 lakh offering from a trusted brand may sway price-conscious buyers who have so far stayed away from electric scooters. If Hero can deliver a well-built, reliable, and practical product at a competitive price, the Vida Z could find significant traction, particularly in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.

As launch day draws closer, we will have more details on specifications, features, and pricing will likely emerge. For now, the Vida Z looks poised to give Hero a more aggressive push into the electric two-wheeler race.
