KTM is preparing to launch its most off-road-focused 390 series motorcycle in India by mid-2025. The KTM 390 Adventure R, expected to be priced between Rs 3.8 lakh and Rs 4 lakh (ex-showroom), aims to cater to riders seeking more serious trail-ready performance than what the standard model offers. Positioned above the regular 390 Adventure, the R variant builds on its platform with better hardware, more travel-friendly features, and a chassis setup designed for challenging terrain.

While the standard 390 Adventure has already carved out a loyal customer base this year, especially after receiving incremental updates, the R version targets a niche but growing community of off-road touring enthusiasts. With the launch timed just before the monsoon eases, KTM hopes to capitalise on the early part of the adventure riding season in the second half of the year.

Rally Roots, Functional Focus

Visually, the 390 Adventure R differentiates itself with styling inspired by KTM’s Dakar machines. It gets vertically stacked LED projector lamps, a high-mounted beak, and a stripped-down tail section that complements its purpose-driven character. The stance is more commanding too, thanks to a taller windscreen and reinforced bodywork, both intended to support aggressive trail use.

Beneath the skin, the updates are far more than cosmetic. The steel trellis frame has been revised with geometry better suited for loose or uneven terrain. Suspension upgrades are significant, featuring fully adjustable WP APEX open-cartridge front forks and a monoshock with an extended travel of 230mm at both ends. Paired with 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wire-spoke wheels, this setup makes the R variant much better equipped to handle real-world off-road scenarios.

Same Engine, New Purpose

The motorcycle uses the new 399cc, liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine found on the latest KTM models. Producing 45.3 bhp and 39 Nm of torque, the motor will be retuned for better low-end responsiveness. Revised gear ratios and a reworked final drive further support off-road applications where tractability and throttle modulation are key. A six-speed gearbox with a bi-directional quickshifter comes standard, useful in low-speed technical sections where clutch modulation becomes tiring.

Engine heat management has also been improved. A curved radiator with twin fans helps keep temperatures under control, even during slow-speed crawls in the heat. The 14-litre fuel tank provides respectable range, making it suitable for long hauls into remote areas.

Electronics Aimed at Real-World Adventure

The 390 Adventure R retains the 5-inch TFT screen seen on other KTM models, offering access to various ride modes like Street, Rain, and Off-road. These modes adjust throttle sensitivity, traction control, and ABS calibration depending on road conditions. Off-road mode, in particular, allows a degree of rear wheel slip, helping riders maintain control on loose surfaces. Riders can also switch ABS to a dedicated Off-road setting or turn off traction control entirely if required.

Other electronic features include cornering ABS, cruise control, and Bluetooth connectivity through KTM’s MyRide app, which enables navigation, music, and call functions. While these additions aren’t new to the segment, they enhance everyday usability without taking away from the bike’s primary function as an off-road tourer.

Competition

The 390 Adventure R will compete with models like the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, which has found favour with adventure riders who value rugged simplicity. KTM’s approach, in contrast, is built around performance, adjustability, and more advanced tech. At its expected price point, the Adventure R does sit at the higher end of the category, but it offers a level of specification that few others in this space can match.

Its lighter kerb weight compared to rivals and higher-spec suspension should make it easier to manage for less experienced riders, especially on demanding trails. Early feedback from international markets has also been positive, highlighting its versatility across both highway stretches and off-road routes. Adjustable suspension, a balanced chassis, and upright ergonomics make it suitable for a wide range of riders and riding conditions.

What to Expect in the Coming Months

Unofficial bookings have already opened at some KTM dealerships, suggesting healthy interest ahead of the official launch. With KTM taking a more serious crack at the off-road touring market, the 390 Adventure R looks set to become a compelling alternative to traditional ADV options in India. For buyers looking for a motorcycle that can genuinely hold its own off the beaten track without giving up too much on-road comfort or practicality, this may well be worth the wait.
