KTM 390 Adventure X To Receive BIG Electronics Update Shortly

KTM is preparing to update its 390 Adventure X motorcycle with features that were previously limited to the higher-priced standard 390 Adventure. The most notable expected addition is cruise control, along with a likely switch to a ride-by-wire throttle system that could enable future electronic enhancements. While KTM has not officially released a full feature list, the upcoming update appears aimed at narrowing the gap between the X and the standard variant without crossing into a higher price category.
The 390 Adventure X was originally launched as a more affordable alternative to the standard model. KTM removed some electronics and used a simpler LCD display to lower the cost. This made it more accessible to riders looking for a capable entry into the adventure segment, but without the expense of more premium features.
Adding cruise control addresses one of the most commonly discussed omissions from the X variant. On long-distance rides, especially on highways, cruise control allows the rider to maintain a steady speed without constantly adjusting the throttle. This reduces hand fatigue and can improve fuel efficiency if used appropriately. While not essential, it is a feature that many touring riders now expect, especially in motorcycles approaching the ₹3 lakh price range.
The move to ride-by-wire throttle could open the door to other improvements as well. This system allows for more precise control of engine response and can support future additions like riding modes and traction control systems. These features are already available in the standard 390 Adventure and other models that use KTM’s 373cc engine, including the Duke 390 and RC 390.
KTM’s timing with this update appears calculated. The entry-level adventure motorcycle market has changed in the past year. The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 introduced significant upgrades in engine technology, off-road performance and rider interface. Other competitors like the BMW G 310 GS continue to draw interest from riders seeking comfort and refinement for mixed-use riding.
KTM has built its brand in India around performance, sharp handling and a sport-oriented approach, even in its adventure offerings. However, the demand in this segment has slowly shifted towards practical features that make a difference during long trips, such as better suspension travel, upright ergonomics, luggage options and simple creature comforts.
The 390 Adventure X already offers decent off-road potential for its price, thanks to its ground clearance, long travel suspension and dual-purpose tyres. What it lacked was some of the software-enabled tech that has become common in bikes that cost slightly more. If KTM can add cruise control and ride-by-wire without significantly increasing the price, it may strike a better balance between value and features.
There is no official confirmation yet on pricing, but a moderate increase of ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 would still keep the X variant well below the ₹3.4 lakh price of the full 390 Adventure. For budget-conscious riders who previously had to choose between capability and comfort, this update could reduce that compromise.
Whether the changes will be enough to regain some momentum in the segment depends on more than just the feature list. KTM will need to ensure that service quality, parts availability and rider comfort are in line with what riders expect from a touring-oriented machine. In the past, KTM’s aggressive power delivery and firm suspension tuning have been points of criticism for some riders, especially on longer journeys.
The 390 Adventure X does not need to become the most advanced bike in its class. But even small improvements, like cruise control and throttle refinement, could go a long way in addressing real-world touring needs. If the updates are implemented thoughtfully and priced sensibly, the revised X variant may become a stronger option for riders who want performance without stretching their budgets for the fully equipped model.
