Today, at its “Next Level” event, the country’s largest electric two-wheeler manufacturer, Ola Electric, launched the newest Gen3 range of its electric scooters. The main highlight of this event was the all-new S1 Pro+, which has now become the flagship electric scooter from the brand. Now, there are a ton of exciting things about this particular electric scooter. However, the most interesting thing is that it offers more range than the ₹11 lakh Tata Tiago.ev. Yes, you read that right.

Ola Electric S1 Pro+: More range than Tata Tiago.ev

The newest flagship electric scooter, the S1 Pro+, from Ola Electric comes with a brand-new and massive 5.3 kWh battery pack. Currently, it is the largest battery pack being offered in any electric scooter in India. Now, the most interesting and impressive part about this bigger battery is that it offers a range of 320 km, which has been IDC certified.

For context, the Tata Tiago.ev, which is the popular electric hatchback, comes equipped with a 24 kWh battery pack. And as per Tata Motors, it offers a claimed range of 315 km on a single full charge. However, in real-world usage, the Tiago.ev only offers a maximum range of 220 km with full power and the air conditioning system on.

Presently, the real-world riding range of the Ola Electric S1 Pro+ has not been confirmed. However, it is estimated to be around 200-220 km on a single full charge. In addition to the 5.3 kWh battery pack, the company is also offering the S1 Pro+ with a 4 kWh battery pack as well. This particular variant, according to the company, will offer 242 km of range. However, in the real world, it is expected to offer 170-180 km.

How can Ola Electric offer such a long range?

At the launch event of the Ola Electric Gen3 scooters, Bhavish Aggarwal, the founder and CMD of Ola Electric, revealed the main reason behind this big step up in the range of his company’s electric scooters. He highlighted that the company is now making its own battery cells, which are called the 4680 Bharat cells.

He highlighted that these battery cells are a lot more energy efficient than the 2170 cells that are imported from South Korea. He added that these batteries are made in-house by Ola Electric at their Giga Factory in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu. The Ola Electric founder also stated that these battery cells have five times more energy and can be charged to 50 percent in just 13 minutes.

In addition to the new battery pack, the Ola S1 Pro+ also offers a few other segment-first features. The main one is that it offers dual-channel ABS. Currently, no other electric or ICE scooter in India offers this feature. Additionally, all the other new Gen3 electric scooters from Ola Electric come equipped with single-channel ABS.

These new Gen3 EV scooters also get brake-by-wire technology, which uses kinetic energy during braking to recharge the battery. As a result, the range of these electric scooters increases by 15 percent. Lastly, the new Gen3 scooters have ditched the traditional belt drive and now get a chain drive. Bhavish Aggarwal added that they have worked thoroughly to reduce the noise produced by the chain drive mechanism.

In terms of pricing, the new Ola S1 Pro+ has been priced at ₹1,54,999 for the 4 kWh variant and ₹1,69,999 for the 5.3 kWh variant. As for the color options, the new S1 Pro+ gets six choices, namely Porcelain White, Midnight Blue, Passion Red, Industrial Silver, Stellar Blue, and Jet Black. In addition to the S1 Pro+, Ola Electric has also launched new Gen 3 S1 X, X+ and Pro models.
