Bengaluru-based electric two-wheeler startup River Mobility has launched its latest generation electric scooter in India. The Gen 3 River Indie has an ex-showroom price of Rs 1.46 lakh. This is Rs 21,000 more than its initial launch price here. However, it commands a premium of just Rs 3,000 over the update that was launched in November last year.

The third-generation scooter comes with both mechanical and tech upgrades. River Mobility was founded in 2021 and the Indie electric scooter that launched in early 2023 continues to be its sole product today. The electric scooter has had good acceptance here, with its unique design and packaging. The new generation is only expected to contribute more to this.

River Indie Generation 3 Updates Explained

Updates on the Gen-3 Indie aim at improving its day-to-day usability and the underlying tech. To start with, the new scooter gets better tyres. These are claimed to offer more grip and better road manners than before. Another big change is the reworked display that offers more readability than before. It now shows the range and charging information.

The mobile app connectivity has also been improved. It now offers more rider information and even displays real-time charging status and customisable data points. The new Indie scooter also sees the addition of a hill-hold assist feature. The company has also improved its riding dynamics based on various customer feedback.

More About The River Indie

The Indie has a strong focus on practicality. It offers generous storage- comes with 43 litres of under-seat storage and a 12-litre front glove box. These have always remained its strongest USP. At launch, the electric scooter came in three colours.

The third-generation, however, is offered in five colour options- Monsoon Blue, Summer Red, Storm Grey, Winter White, and Spring Yellow, with contrasting black accents. The Indie rides on 14-inch wheels and has a ground clearance of 165 mm. Due to the same, River calls it the ‘SUV of electric scooters’. The scooter comes with two USB ports, front-set foot-pegs, forward and reverse parking assist, and LED headlamps.

The powertrain remains largely untouched on the Gen-3 Indie. It continues to be offered with a 4kWh battery pack that claims an IDC range of 163 km per charge. Expect a real-world range of around 110 km. Three riding modes are offered- Eco, Ride, and Rush.

The electric motor on this two-wheeler is capable of making 8.9hp. The new Indie continues to have a top speed of 90 kph and takes five hours to charge from 0-80 per cent, over a 750 W charger. The scooter also comes with a combi-braking system for added safety. It continues to be equipped with disc brakes at both ends.

The update in 2024 gave the scooter a new chain drive system with a single-speed gearbox. This replaced the previous belt-drive back then. The new scooter also gets the chain drive mechanism. The shift to chain drive has reportedly lowered ownership costs and improved reliability.

River Expanding To More Parts of India

Even though they have been performing well on the sales front, River’s presence has so far been limited to the South. It currently has 34 outlets spread across cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Kochi, Coimbatore, Patna, and Hubli.

Now, the company has opened its first store in Delhi, in Rajouri Garden. This will act as a hub for its business in North India. River has plans to expand it to 80 stores by March next year. New outlets will be set up in Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.
