Triumph is looking at expanding its 400 range further by adding a more affordable scrambler model to it. A video captured by Shiftinggears shows the motorcycle undergoing road trials. It gives us a quick look at the design that is to be expected.

Triumph’s Upcoming 400cc Affordable Scrambler: What Do We Know About It?

As you know, Triumph already has the Scrambler 400X on sale in India. The company is well aware of the price-sensitive nature of the Indian market and in recent times, has pulled off interesting strategies to address the same. In September last year, Triumph launched the Speed T4 as a more affordable version of the roadster. The motorcycle in this video could be a similar take on the Scrambler. It will likely be called the Scrambler T4 when launched.

Triumph Scrambler T4: What Do We Know About It?

In the video, the scrambler is seen in motion. It barely has any camouflage on it and we can see most areas of the design. Most lines and body panels are similar to those of the Scrambler 400X. Cost cutting, can however, be seen in areas like the seat design.

Unlike the 400X which comes with a well-sculpted, premium split unit, this test bike has a fairly simple single-piece seat. The tail lamp cluster also is different and cost cutting can also be seen in the design and construction of the grab rail.

Look closely and you will notice that the tank diesn’t have rubber pads, which you find on the 400X. The handlebar too has a simpler design and lacks brace pads. The motorcycle in this video also ditches the 400X’s knuckle guards.

We can also see that the USD forks of the 400X are retained on the affordable version, but the lose their Golden paint. The instrument cluster will be a cheaper semi-digital unit. The wheels seen here, are different, and likely have skinnier rubber.

In a set of previous spy shots, the motorcycle was seen carrying sensors and testing equipment on its exhaust bend pipe. This hinted at the possibility of the production model getting a different state of tune, compared to the 400X. There could even be physical changes in the powertrain, the details of which are expected to be out closer to the launch.

Clear differences can be noticed in the engine outputs of the Speed 400 and Speed 400 T4. The former produces 40hp and 37.5 Nm while the T4’s engine has been detuned. It generates 31PS at 7000rpm and 36Nm at 5000rpm- about 9PS and 1.5Nm less than the Speed 400’s output.

Triumph could take a similar approach with the Scrambler 400X and its T4 version. At present, the 400X produces the same power and torque as the Speed 400. Thus, the T4 version could likely come with 31 PS and 36 Nm.

The Tricky Pricing Game

At present, the Scrambler 400X has a price of Rs 2.67 lakh, ex-showroom. The T4 version will cost less. It is likely to be priced aggressively, especially considering the current market dynamics. The proposed GST hike on ‘premium motorcycles’ could potentially unsettle the segment that the 400s fall into.

As of now, we don’t know the actual direction that the government would take with the revised slabs, even though most reports point to an upcoming tax hike. This will likely make Triumph and its Indian partner Bajaj to launch the T4 sooner than expected, so that the motorcycle gets the initial traction that it deserves.

Talking of prices, we expect it to be around 2.4 lakh rupees, ex-showroom- roughly Rs 25,000 less than that of the 400X.
