Triumph Motorcycles India has finally launched the much-awaited Thruxton 400 at an ex-showroom starting price of Rs 2.74 lakh. For the uninformed, the Thruxton is a cafe racer. The British brand has used the nameplate on various cafe racer models in the past. The new bike is based on the 400cc platform. It is also the fifth model to be based on it. The other members are the Speed 400, Scrambler 400 X, Scrambler 400 XC, and the Speed T4. Even though it shares the core mechanicals with the other 400cc Triumphs, the Thruxton 400 has enough changes gone into it to make it stand out.

At 2.74 lakh, ex-showroom, the Thruxton 400 is Rs 24,000 more expensive than the Speed 400 and is placed below the Scrambler 400 XC in Triumph's 400cc lineup. It doesn't have a direct rival in the segment today.

The closest competition will be from Royal Enfield Continental GT 650, which belongs to a higher segment and has its price in the range of Rs 3.26 lakh- Rs 3.52 lakh (ex-showroom). Needless to say, it has a mightier parallel-twin engine with air and oil cooling.

A Closer Look At The Thruxton 400

This motorcycle is based on the Speed 400. It, however, stands unique with its visual appeal and ergonomics. It has classic cafe racer styling. You'll see a half binkini fairing which runs from the base of the fuel tank till the headlight, circular headlamp with integrated LED DRLs, clip-on handlebars, bar end mirrors, remote brake reservoir, refreshed side panels, and Black USD forks (The Speed 400 has Golden ones). Another interesting element is the 'Thruxton' badge.

Aligning with cafe racer styling, it gets a single-seat setup with a rear cowl as standard. The pillion seat is in fact, hidden under the rear cowl. You can remove it to access the rear seat. The motorcycle also has a classy rear grab rail.

The taillights are rectangular, unlike the Speed 400's circular lamps. The fuel tank also hosts subtle visual changes but remains unchanged in capacity. It can accommodate 13 litres of fuel. The footpegs too have been repositioned. The bike has a leaned-forward riding position.

Four colour options are offered- Lava Red Gloss and Aluminum Silver; Pearl Metallic White and Storm Grey; Metallic Racing Yellow with Aluminum Silver; and Phantom Black with Aluminum Silver. A diagonal stripe of contrasting colour can be seen in all of these colour schemes.

Mechanical Specifications

The Thruxton 400 has borrowed its powerplant from the Speed 400- the same 398cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine. It has, however, been uptuned and now makes 42 hp (a 2hp increase over the Speed 400's 40hp). The torque, however, remains unchanged at 37.5Nm. The transmission on offer is a 6-speed unit with a slipper clutch.

The mainframe remains unchanged, but the cafe racer gets a new subframe. The suspension, on the other hand, offers 10mm more travel than what the Speed 400 does, and stands at 140mm. It will ride on MRF or Apollo tyres. The speed, on the other hand, continues to ride on Vredestein rubber.

The wheelbase and ground clearance have also gone down slightly, compared to what the Speed offers. The seat height is now 795mm and the vehicle weight stands at 183 kilograms- 4kg heavier than the Speed 400. Braking is handled by discs at both ends.

Features

The Thruxton comes with the same digi-analogue instrument cluster as the Speed, with a vertical rev counter and gear position indicator. Additionally, it also gets the likes of dual-channel ABS and traction control,
