Riding a two-wheeler without a helmet on a public road is actually an offense, and everyone knows it. However, people still tend to break this rule for their convenience. Recently, the Vizag police and transport department launched a special drive to nab habitual offenders. During the drive, the authorities seized as many as 39 two-wheelers belonging to repeat offenders.

Deputy Transport Commissioner R. Ch. Srinivas, after the inspection drive, stated that such checks would continue on the road to catch offenders. As per the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988, all two-wheeler riders, along with the pillion rider, must wear helmets. Failing to do so will result in a fine and other actions, such as the suspension of the driving license. If a person is caught driving a vehicle during the suspension period, further action would be taken against the driver, and their license would be liable for cancellation.

The Supreme Court has ordered both the police and transport department to take strict action against offenders who do not follow the rules. District and Sessions Judge Alapati Giridhar is keen on the strict implementation of the apex court’s orders and has directed the enforcement authorities to act tough on motorists violating these rules.

In Vizag, the cops stopped all motorists who were riding a two-wheeler without a helmet. Among those riders, the police seized vehicles belonging to owners who had been caught multiple times in the past for the same offense. The report doesn’t mention anything about the fine amount issued to the offenders.

Helmets Are a Must

A helmet is an absolutely essential safety gear that one should wear while riding a two-wheeler. We have come across several incidents where people have protested against the police and authorities for making helmets compulsory inside the city. Even today, in cities like Pune and some areas of Rajasthan, you will find people riding on city roads and highways without helmets.

This is extremely dangerous because, in the event of an accident, a helmet is what protects you from severe head injuries. In India, there have been several instances where people were saved from major injuries simply because they were wearing a helmet.

Not just helmets, but other accessories are also part of essential riding gear. A person riding a two-wheeler should not wear slippers or sandals. Instead, they should wear shoes or, if possible, riding boots. This helps protect their feet in case of a fall. Wearing slippers or sandals is risky as it exposes the feet to injuries. Other safety gear, such as riding jackets, knee guards, and elbow guards, can also help prevent major injuries.

However, in India, the majority of people rely on two-wheelers for commuting and see them merely as a mode of transport. Most people are not willing to invest in safety gear, seeing it as an unnecessary expense. They also find it uncomfortable, which discourages them from using it.

A helmet and proper footwear are an absolute must for anyone riding a two-wheeler. We urge people to follow traffic rules and prioritize their safety on public roads.
