Mahindra Thar 5 Door Unveiled: Launch Date, Price, and Features Review

The Mahindra Thar took the Indian off-roading scene by storm when it launched in 2020. With rugged construction, potent engines and impressive capability, the Thar became an instant icon. However, the 3-door configuration posed practicality issues for some buyers. Mahindra is now set to introduce the Thar 5 Door in 2024 to address those concerns. Here’s an early preview of what we can expect from the more practical new iteration.

While still highly capable off-road, the Mahindra Thar 5 Door leans more towards everyday family usage. The front seats are as accommodating as before, but the longer wheelbase liberates generous room for rear passengers. There’s also now auto climate control, rear AC vents, fast charging USB ports and segment-first rear seat arm rests.
Boot space sees a mild 70 litre increase to 384 litres. But folding down the 2nd row opens up a cavernous 857 litres cargo capacity. New creature comforts like auto headlamps/wipers, cruise control and a sunroof further boost comfort and convenience.
As expected, the Mahindra Thar 5 Door continues with the tried and tested powertrains from the 3-door version. This includes the 150PS/320Nm 2.0L turbo-petrol and the 130PS/300Nm 2.2L diesel. Both engines come mated to either a 6-speed MT for purists or 6-speed AT torque converter gearboxes for regular usage. Off-road hardware like mechanical locking differentials, terrain response modes and hill descent control will also make it intact.
Mahindra has updated the dashboard layout with the 5 Door Thar in mind. It looks similar but gets a new larger 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The unit is the latest from the Mahindra parts bin with smartphone connectivity options and Adrenox connected features. Ambient lighting, steering mounted audio controls, engine start/stop button also make it in.
Safety is enhanced with additions like dual airbags, rear parking sensors, ISOFIX child seat anchors as standard. Higher grades will add side and curtain airbags, electronic stability control and tyre pressure monitoring.

The off-roading DNA of the original Thar encapsulated in a more practical, family-friendly package. That’s just what the 2024 Mahindra 5 Door Thar seems to offer for buyers wanting the best of both worlds. It could emerge as the ideal SUV for leisure and outdoor post-pandemic adventures that have become hugely popular. If priced attractively, expect the Mahindra Thar 5-door to be a sure-shot success just like its smaller sibling!
