Back in the 2000s, a lot of popular SUVs, including the Tata Sierra, came with a spare tyre mounted on the rear tailgate. Even today, some of the very popular SUVs come with the same. Unfortunately, a lot of automakers are now shying away from this design which gave the SUVs the purpose-built appeal. Now, recently imagining how the newly launched 2025 Tata Sierra, which does not get a traditional spare tyre mounted on the tailgate, will look like with one attached, a few rendered images have been shared online.

Tata Sierra imagined with spare tyre covers

The video of the two styles of spare tyres on the newly launched Tata Sierra has been shared on Youtube. In the image, we can note a Bengal Rouge Red colored Tata Sierra with a spare tyre in the rear. This particular tyre has a cover finished in the same color and has a big Tata logo in the middle.

In addition to this rendered image, another rendering is shown in which the design of the spare tyre cover is different. The second cover is a complete cover which completely hides the rear tailgate-mounted spare tyre. The previous one exposed the tyre but managed to hide the wheel. The original Tata Sierra was offered with similar designs of spare tyre covers back in the day.

Why do carmakers offer tailgate-mounted spare wheels?

When SUVs started becoming popular in India, almost all of them were based on the traditional ladder-on-frame chassis. So, due to this, there was not enough space left for luggage if the spare tyre was fitted inside the cabin of the SUV. So, to save space and give the vehicles a unique visual identity, spare tyres started getting mounted on the tailgates.

Additionally, the heavy wheels, when mounted on the tailgates, offered a balance in weight distribution. In ladder-frame SUVs with a heavy front engine, tailgate-mounted spares helped shift some weight to the rear. This helped in improving the traction on the rear axle, which became especially more useful for RWD or 4x4 off-roaders.

Why are automakers avoiding tailgate-mounted spare tyres today?

Today, a lot of popular automakers have ditched the rear tailgate-mounted spare tyre design. Now, the main reason behind this phenomenon is that automakers now want their SUVs to look more sleek rather than rugged. The new futuristic design approach clashes with the off-road aesthetics offered by the spare tyre in the rear.

Additionally, the rear tyre mounted on the tailgate increases the weight of the vehicle in the rear. So, to reduce weight and also improve the visibility from the rear windshield, automakers are shying away from this design. As for the true enthusiasts, they miss the rear-mounted spare tyre and want automakers to start offering it back.
