26-Year Old Tata Sierra Compact SUV: What It Used To Offer [Video]

Tata Motors is currently working on several ICE and EV projects. The Sierra is one of them. While we are all eagerly waiting for the new-generation Tata Sierra, there are a bunch of enthusiasts who still have the older - or rather the original - Tata Sierra SUV. We see videos of modifications and restorations of these machines on the internet. Here, we have one such video where a detailed walkaround of a 26-year-old Tata Sierra Turbo is shown.
The video has been shared by Namaste Car on his YouTube channel. In this video, the vlogger gives a detailed walkaround and a bit of history about the Tata Sierra. The Sierra was initially launched in 1991, and the SUV seen in the video is a 1999 model. The car was actually India’s first-ever compact SUV. It was initially offered with a naturally aspirated diesel engine, and a turbo version was introduced at a later stage.
The car seen in the video is not the cleanest-looking Sierra in the country, but we understand that maintaining a car like this has its own challenges, and we are not blaming anyone for the same. The Sierra became popular among collectors and enthusiasts only after it was discontinued. The reason it was not a hit model was that it was a car ahead of its time in India.
For example, it was an SUV that only had two doors at the front. The 3-door SUV was not practical, and it was also an expensive car for the Indian market in the ’90s. It was loaded with premium features like power windows, power steering, AC, tachometer, and so on.
Now, we’ll get to the walkaround video. In this video, the vlogger shows the exterior and interior of the Tata Sierra. The SUV, as mentioned above, is not in its best shape, but the owner has ensured that the car is in its stock configuration.
It gets the typical boxy design usually seen on SUVs - the squared-out headlamps, clear-lens turn indicators, blacked-out bumper with a skid plate underneath, a decent-sized front grille with the Tata logo in the center, long bonnet, footboards, thick cladding around the wheel arches, large window for the rear seat passengers, and so on.
The car came with two rear wipers and even had a rear defogger. The spare wheel was mounted on the tailgate, and the wheel caps on the steel rims were also stock.
The interior of the SUV looked stock with an all-black dashboard. The steering wheel came with tilt and telescopic adjustments. The seats were brown-colored and have aged pretty well. The cabin feels airy and spacious. While the car does require a lot of attention, it is definitely a great example that shows how Tata Motors started and where they are now.
The engine on this Tata Sierra Turbo was a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit that generated 89 bhp and 186 Nm of torque. It was also available with a manual transmission.
