Buying a car is still a big dream for many in a country like India. While some are lucky enough to be around cars from a very young age, there are many people who are not that fortunate and consider cars a luxury. Most Indians have to work hard their whole lives just to be able to buy a car. A luxury car is not even in the minds of many, for obvious reasons.

Here is an inspiring story of an Indian farmer from Tamil Nadu who fulfilled his childhood dream of owning a luxury car at the age of 88. The way this farmer turned his dream into reality is truly remarkable. In 2018, the 88-year-old farmer bought a Mercedes-Benz B-Class, and the video of his purchase soon went viral on the internet.

The video was shared by SBS Aviation on their YouTube channel. When the video was released, he was 88 years old. We are not sure if he is still alive but, if he is, he would be 95 years old by now. It features H. Devarajan, the farmer who bought the car, and explains how his love for Mercedes-Benz began in childhood. Mr. Devarajan first saw a Mercedes-Benz when he was around 8 years old. He didn’t know the brand or the model at that time, but the three-pointed star logo left a lasting impression on him.

That very day, he promised himself that one day he would buy a Mercedes-Benz. He worked hard throughout his life to keep that promise and finally fulfilled it at the age of 88. The happiness on his face was evident, and the dealership too celebrated his lifetime achievement. They made special arrangements for the delivery and even brought a cake, which Mr. Devarajan cut during the occasion. In the video, he can also be heard expressing gratitude to his wife, who supported him at every stage of his life.

Mr. Devarajan visited the dealership with his family, completed the paperwork, and finally received the keys. He bought a B-Class MPV, which is no longer available in the Indian market. This sub-compact luxury MPV was the first of its kind launched by the German brand in India. Known for its spacious design, it had large doors that made entry and exit easier, especially for elderly people like Mr. Devarajan.

The video focuses more on the sense of joy and achievement rather than the car’s details. Throughout the video, his smile reflects his happiness. The B-Class was not an inexpensive car - when sold in India, it cost nearly ₹32 lakh (ex-showroom) and came with both petrol and diesel engine options.

These days, owning a luxury car has become far easier than it used to be. Just last week, a video from Bihar went viral showing a farmer using a BMW 5 Series sedan to transport green fodder for his cattle. Across the country, several used luxury car dealers have emerged, especially in places like Delhi NCR, where, due to the 10-year rule on diesel vehicles, well-maintained luxury cars are often sold at very attractive prices.
