Man Sues Bengaluru's City Corporation For Trauma Caused By Bad Roads, Demands 50 Lakh Compensation

Have you ever thought of seeking compensation for having to travel through bad and broken roads? Well, someone has sued the civic body for trauma caused by bad roads and demanded 50 lakh rupees in compensation! This amusing incident comes from Bengaluru in Karnataka and follows the chaos caused by heavy rain in the city.
Dhivya Kiran, a 43-year old tax-paying citizen from Richmond Town, sent a legal notice to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) (Bengaluru's civic body responsible for maintaining roads), explaining that he had to endure several health issues due to the poor road infrastructure, and demanded a sizeable sum in compensation.
Kiran has demanded Rs 50 lakh as compensation for the “physical agony and emotional trauma” that he had to undergo while using the city's poor road infrastructure. An additional sum of Rs 10,000 has also been demanded to cover the legal notice charges.
“Bengaluru roads are a mess. Even the smallest pothole can cause so much distress,” Kiran told NDTV. He says that the roads have given him both physical pain and emotional drains. He further says that these were due to BBMP’s “blatant failure to maintain basic civic infrastructure." The notice was served on May 14, 2025, by Advocate K V Laveen.
Kiran has reportedly developed severe neck and back pain, which doctors link to jerks and trauma experienced while commuting through bad roads and rough patches. His health conditions got so bad that Kiran had to go visit orthopaedic specialists five times and make four emergency trips to St Philomena’s Hospital.
“My client states that he was forced to visit 5 orthopaedic specialists due to the intensifying pain. He made 4 emergency visits to St. Philomena’s Hospital, undergoing injections and procedures to relieve acute agony. Further, have been on multiple medications and painkillers to manage the condition,” Advocate Laveen said.
The 43-year old has also reported severe anxiety, emotional drain, and loss of sleep. Reports say that there have been several instances in which he would cry out in pain. These health issues have had a major impact on his well-being and daily functioning, as per the lawyer.
Kiran says that he can no longer use two-wheelers or three-wheelers for commuting. Bumpy rides in these will likely worsen his spinal condition. He says that even cab rides have become difficult. These developments have thus limited his mobility severely, affecting both personal and professional fronts.
Kiran hopes to cover his medical expenses (both past and future) and make up for the travel costs for his treatment, with the money he has demanded. The civic body is expected to respond within 15 days. If it doesn't, Kiran will pursue civil action and file a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Karnataka High Court. Doing so could turn this into a severe legal battle. He has also warned of approaching the Lokayukta and the State Human Rights Commission for a proper resolution.
The city received heavy downpour in the past few days. It recorded over 130 mm of rainfall in just 12 hours, starting from Sunday night (May 18). This caused major floods and confusion at various places in and around Bengaluru. Many residents had to evacuate their waterlogged homes, in inflatable boats.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow alert until Friday. This means that it is unlikely for the rain to subside at least till the end of this week. The hefty downpour could likely make Bengaluru's road conditions further worse....
