Last year, the Government of Uttar Pradesh waived off the road taxes for strong hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles. It was done after an automotive enthusiast challenged the government at the Allahabad High Court, stating that the EV policy of the UP government applies to strong hybrid vehicles as well. Now, as a result of this strong hybrid registration tax waiver, recently an enthusiast shared how he managed to save Rs 25 lakh on a brand-new BMW M5 Competition worth Rs 2 crore.
Saved Rs 25 lakh on BMW M5 Competition in UP
This video, talking about the Rs 25 lakh saved on the purchase of a BMW M5 Competition, has been shared on Instagram by Pranay Kapoor on their page. In this short video, the host was interviewing the owner of this particular BMW M5 Competition. The first question he asked was about the pricing, taxes, and insurance of this particular sports sedan.
To this, the owner mentions that the ex-showroom price of the BMW M5 Competition is Rs 1.99 crore. He added that a few additional options were added to the vehicle. However, the price of these options was nothing significant. The owner then continued and highlighted that what they did was they registered this vehicle in Uttar Pradesh instead of Delhi.
The reason behind this move was that strong hybrid vehicles in Uttar Pradesh are exempted from road taxes and registration charges. As a result of this, he was able to save Rs 20–25 lakh on his brand-new vehicle. He highlighted that this particular vehicle has a massive 4.4-litre V8 engine. But just because it is a plug-in hybrid, it was exempted from taxes.
BMW M5 Competition pricing in other states
The owner in this video has to pay only Rs 50,000 as road tax and registration fees in Uttar Pradesh. However, if he had registered the same vehicle in Delhi, he would have paid Rs 20.44 lakh extra. Also, the same BMW M5 Competition in Mumbai costs Rs 40.82 lakh more. Lastly, in Bengaluru, Karnataka, the road tax on this vehicle is Rs 40.6 lakh.
How is this possible?
To many people, it may seem odd as to why such an expensive, petrol-guzzling vehicle is getting such a tax break. Well, the answer to this is that it all started back in 2023, when a businessman named Piyush Bhutani filed a writ petition in the Allahabad High Court. In his case, he argued that the UP government’s 2022 EV policy states that all electric motor vehicle-driven vehicles are exempted from road taxes and registration fees.
So, as his Toyota Innova Hycross strong hybrid is also driven by an electric motor, its tax should also be refunded. Due to this argument and a review of the EV policy of the Government of Uttar Pradesh, the Allahabad High Court ordered the UP government to waive off road taxes on strong hybrids.
BMW M5 Competition
Coming back to the BMW M5 Competition, it is the track-focused and more hardcore version of the latest generation BMW 5-Series. It comes equipped with a massive 4.4-litre V8 motor and an electric motor as well. Combined, this powerplant makes 717 bhp of power and 1000 Nm of torque. It also gets an 18.6 kWh battery pack, which offers it a range of 69 km. What's astonishing is that it can do a sprint of 0–100 kmph in just 3.5 seconds.
