Bus Overturns While Trying to Save a Careless Bike Rider Attempting to Cross a Busy Highway
On Indian roads, reckless riding is a major issue, and we have seen several examples in the past where such behavior leads to crashes. This irresponsible behavior often causes inconvenience to other road users as well. Here, we have a video from Maharashtra showing a state transport bus carrying passengers on a highway overturning after the driver attempted to save a biker who carelessly joined the highway and decided to cross it.
The video has been shared by Lokmat Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on its X profile. The accident was reported on the Latur-Chakur highway. The video was recorded by a CCTV camera installed on the road. In the footage, we see vehicles passing on both sides of the four-lane highway.
It is not too busy, but there are a decent number of vehicles on it. The camera is positioned in such a way that it faces an intersection. We see a Mahindra Bolero pass through the road, and just after that, a bike enters the highway from the service road. The biker and pillion rider were attempting to cross the highway and reach the other side.
The biker turned without checking for oncoming traffic. A state transport bus, carrying passengers, was approaching at high speed. The biker didn’t notice the bus at all. It appears that the rider was distracted and talking to the pillion. By the time he realized there was a bus, it was too late. The biker immediately turned the bike around.
The bus driver, on the other hand, also tried his best to save the biker. He applied the brakes and turned the bus toward the other side of the road through the median gap. While attempting to cross, the rear tires of the bus hit the median, causing the bus to go out of control. Within seconds, the bus toppled.
Luckily, no other vehicle was coming from the opposite direction when the accident occurred. According to reports, 35 passengers on the bus suffered injuries. The biker who caused the accident can be seen on the other side of the road.
Who Is at Fault?
There is no doubt that the biker who attempted to cross the highway carelessly is at fault here. As mentioned earlier, this was not a very busy highway. Had the biker been more patient, he could have easily avoided the accident. There were no other vehicles behind the bus, and he could have crossed safely without any issue.
It was clearly due to the biker's careless attitude that this accident happened. In fact, the bus driver should be appreciated for his quick thinking. He turned the bus away from the bike within seconds. Unfortunately, he did not anticipate the rear wheels hitting the median, which caused the crash. Had the bus driver not swerved, the biker would have been crushed under the bus.
This is not the first time we have come across an incident like this from India. If you look carefully, it also looks like the biker and pillion were not wearing any riding helmet. A riding helmet is a must for a two-wheeler rider as it helps you from head injuries in case of accident.
While such incidents have been reported on several occasions, people do not seem to care at all. They continue to act irresponsibly on the road creating chaos wherever they go.
We hope that the biker was identified by the bus driver and that the authorities took action against him for this reckless behavior. The biker not only put his own life at risk but also endangered the lives of many passengers on the bus.
