Indians and their love for “Jugaad” is something that is known to the world. In fact this word was officially added to the Oxford dictionary a few years ago. If you are hearing this word for the first time, then let us explain what it actually means. Jugaad is a commonly used Hindi word. It is a concept that means non-conventional, frugal innovation. It also refers to innovative fixes and simple workarounds and solutions. In short, it is a creative way of using existing resources to make things work and create new things.

Here, we have a video that can be called a perfect example of Jugaad. The video has been shared by Nayan Mistry on Instagram. It was probably recorded in Odisha. The exact location, however, is not known.

In this video, we see a Toyota Fortuner (current generation) moving through a narrow city road. Everything about the car looked normal—except one thing. The left-side ORVM (Outside Rear View Mirror) of the Toyota Fortuner SUV was actually missing. The mirror might have shattered or cracked in a minor accident.

This is where the creative mind of the owner—or probably the person driving the car—came into action. Driving a car without an ORVM can be extremely hectic, especially if you are in a suburban area with heavy traffic and narrow roads.

To fix the issue, the owner took a small vanity mirror. We are not sure if the owner went with this fix because an original ORVM is extremely expensive or was actually on his way to the service center to get it fixed.

Whatever the reason may be, the owner of the Toyota Fortuner used his presence of mind to make use of the available resources to find a temporary solution. He installed a vanity mirror inside the ORVM cover and started using it instead of the original mirror.

He actually taped the small vanity mirror onto the ORVM cover so that he wouldn’t have difficulties seeing the traffic coming from the rear. This is definitely an innovative solution to a problem he encountered.

Not the First Time

This is not the first time we have come across a jugaad video from India that went viral. In fact, we often look for solutions that are cost-effective and simple. We look for alternate options.

For example, a few months ago, we came across a video where a person converted a Maruti WagonR hatchback into a pickup truck. The video of this WagonR went viral on the internet, and the person was seen driving it on the road with the roof chopped off and large milk cans in the rear.

The roof and doors of the car, along with the rear seats, had been removed by the owner to convert the car into a pickup truck. Instead of buying a new pickup, the person probably bought an old, used WagonR and modified it to suit his needs. This way, he could get his work done without spending a lot.

Similarly, we have also seen videos where people have taken the engine of a scooter and installed it on a cycle rickshaw to convert it into a petrol-powered one for ease of work. Both these are commonly seen jugaads on Indian roads.
