A lot of people on roads violate traffic rules every day and get away with it. This is because the police authorities cannot stop and fine each and every traffic rule violator. However, the Delhi Traffic Police department has come up with an ingenious way to make sure that a lot of these offenders are slapped with fines and the need to follow safety rules increases. Recently, Delhi Traffic Police has launched the Prahari app in which citizens can report other citizens violating traffic rules and earn Rs 50,000 per month.

Launched by Delhi Traffic Police, the Prahari application is currently available for Android users and can be downloaded via the Google Play Store. As per the traffic police authorities, aware citizens of the city can contribute the details of people violating traffic rules, and based on the contributions made, they can earn up to Rs 50,000 per month.

As per the reports, currently each day 1,400–1,500 submissions are being made by the citizens. After which, these submissions made by the citizens first get verified by the DCP Traffic S.K. Singh, and after that, the challans are sent to the owners of the vehicles and drivers found in violation.

Before sending the challans and notifying the submitter, they are thoroughly checked for authenticity. It has to be made sure that submissions are not false reports or have been made due to personal vendetta. As for the rewards, the top contributors are ranked each month.

The person with the most number of verified contributions gets rewarded Rs 50,000. Following that, the second-rank holder gets Rs 25,000, and the third and fourth rankers are rewarded with Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000, respectively. This reward system has made this application viral, and people have even formed WhatsApp groups to coordinate their efforts.

Volunteers who are part of these WhatsApp groups are now dividing regions amongst themselves. This locality-based monitoring makes sure that people are not overlapping. This viral method to curb traffic rule violations is especially helpful for unemployed individuals. It is providing a side income to others while helping improve public discipline.

Not the first such initiative

This is not the first time that traffic police authorities are taking the help of citizens to reduce traffic violations. Back in February of last year, the Pune Traffic Police and Transport Department authorities also initiated a whistleblower program.

Under this program, they urged citizens to report instances of modified exhaust systems, particularly those emitting excessive noise. To facilitate this, authorities introduced a dedicated WhatsApp number through which residents can easily notify officials of motorcycles equipped with loud silencers. At the time, a total of 571 aftermarket exhausts from Royal Enfield motorcycles were destroyed by the authorities.
