It has been months since Hyundai launched the Creta Electric in the Indian market. We have so far seen plenty of content around it, on various social media platforms. A recent video shared on Instagram stands out for a reason. Shared by the famous Indian athlete Chandeep Singh, it shows him driving the Creta EV with his foot. Before you jump to conclusions, Singh is a double-hand amputee! The video has been amassing massive viewership and AM Hyundai, a dealer, has promoted it on its social handles as well.

The Video

The reel shows Chandeep Singh driving a Creta Electric on wet roads, steering it with his right foot. The vehicle seems to be carrying a decent speed and a person can be seen seated in the co-driver's seat. While you might find this to be amusing, and may even end up appreciating the athlete for his terrific vehicle control and swag, there are risks involved as well.

To start with, Singh is driving the vehicle on a wet road (as confirmed by the wipers in the visuals). It could be a possibility that the vehicle could go out of control when being manoeuvred at high speeds, on wet surfaces. The EV's peppy nature will only add to this risk.

The video also shows the electric SUV's ADAS to have been engaged. The Creta Electric comes with Level 2 ADAS. It gets adaptive cruise control and Lane Keep Assist, which are of great use in ensuring safety in scenarios such as this.

Is It Legal For An Amputee To Drive A Car In India?

You might now wonder if it is legal for a double-hand amputee to drive a car in India. Yes, it is, but there are set terms and conditions involved. The vehicle should have special modifications gone into it. According to the law, the vehicle should have modifications that facilitate hand controls, left foot accelerator, and steering aids like a steering knob or wheel spinner. These will allow the driver to steer with ease. The dashboard controls could also be relocated to ensure easier access.

In this case, it is unclear if such modifications have been made to this electric SUV. However, the electric powertrain, advanced driver aids, and the 'easy to drive' nature of Creta EV would make it convenient for Singh to drive.

Still, we can't say that driving at such speeds, on wet roads, with just the feet is a safe practice or something that should be promoted. In the event of an emergency, or in a situation that demands panic braking, aggressive steering inputs or tricky manoeuvres, the two-arm amputated driver could be less efficient and land himself and those around in trouble.
