7 Lakh MG Comet With 1 Crore Number: Real or Fake? [Video]

People in India are obsessed with fancy registration numbers. Sometimes, to fulfill their passion, they even spend more on the registration number than the vehicle itself. Recently, a video showing one such example has been shared online. According to the video, this particular MG Comet EV, worth Rs 7 lakh, was seen with a number plate 14 times its cost, that is, Rs 1 crore. Now, whether this is real or fake, we are here to tell you all about it.
This video showing an MG Comet EV with a unique number plate has been shared on Instagram by Auto Journal India. In this short clip, the creator starts by stating that he was just passing by this MG Comet EV when he noticed this unique number plate. He added that this green number plate for an EV was “RNQ 4.”
Following this, he added that these types of number plates are generally seen with older cars and a lot more expensive vehicles. He then added that when he saw this number on an MG Comet EV, he could not resist stopping. He states that this number plate is worth Rs 1 crore. Meanwhile, the car itself costs Rs 7 lakh.
Well, it has to be made clear that even though this number is very unique, it does not cost Rs 1 crore. Now, there are two main reasons behind this. The first reason is that currently, the most expensive number plate that has been sold in Rajasthan is worth Rs 16 lakh.
This particular registration number is “RJ 45 CG 1,” and the owner, Rahul Taneja, a businessman from Rajasthan, paid Rs 16 lakh for this number. He bought this number for his Jaguar XJL luxury sedan, which was the flagship sedan sold by the British carmaker in India.
Apart from this number, Taneja also happens to be the owner of Rajasthan’s second most expensive number plate as well. This particular number, RJ 14 CP 1, was bought by him for Rs 10.31 lakh. It was bought for his BMW 5 Series luxury sedan. This number was then transferred to his BMW 7 Series after he sold his 5 Series.
Now, coming to the second reason why the above number plate of the MG Comet EV is not worth Rs 1 crore. It is because owners like Taneja, who purchase such expensive numbers, actually transfer their older numbers onto their newer cars.
We generally see this type of shorter number on vehicles in Punjab. People have been transferring their old numbers to newer cars, as this makes them look cool. They also do this so they don’t have to shell out huge sums to buy new fancy registration numbers.
When we buy a car, we have to pay registration fees to the Regional Transport Office, and they then allot a new random registration number. However, if you have a fancy number or a lucky number that you had on your previous vehicle, you can get it transferred to your new vehicle. There is a procedure that has to be followed to do so.
Now, before you start the procedure, the biggest prerequisite is that you have to own the number that you want to transfer for more than three years. Now, if this criterion is met, you can start with the procedure. To help in transferring numbers, the RTO has made four categories for numbers. These include VIP number plates, attractive number plates, most attractive number plates, and other general number plates.
Depending on the type of number, the fees can vary from Rs 300 to Rs 2,000 and more. As for the steps to transfer the number, you first have to visit the VAHAN website. After this, you have to select “Retention of Registration No.” from the Vehicle Services list.
Next, you have to log in and book an appointment at the state RTO. You then have to pay the required fees, according to your type of number, and then submit the slip to the car dealer. Finally, you have to visit the Motor License Officer’s office and complete the formalities.
