Force Gurkha Makes The Mercedes Benz G63 AMG Look Small: Street Presence Compared

The Force Gurkha has been around for years. We’ve loved its butch stance, promising capabilities and the sheer ruggedness over time. It is often praised for how imposing it looks and the visual resemblance to the legendary off-roader- Mercedes G Wagen. Fans often call it the Desi G. A recent set of pictures shared on Reddit show a Gurkha parked alongside the G Wagen, providing a first-hand visual comparison of the two SUVs.
The post shows a Gurkha parked next to a White Mercedes G63 AMG. The G63 has a huge fan crowd across the globe. It is often considered the ultimate SUV. Interestingly here, the legendary Mercedes SUV looks smaller than the Force Gurkha. The Gurkha stands taller than the Mercedes and has a more imposing stance. It also seems to have a higher ground clearance.
If we compare numbers, the G63 AMG is 4,873 mm long, 2,187 mm wide and 1966 mm tall. The wheelbase here is 2,890 mm and the SUV has a ground clearance of 238 mm. The Gurkha has both 3-door and five-door forms and it seems to be the former in these pictures. It is shorter than the G Class.
The length, width and height are 3,965 mm, 1,865 mm, and 2,080 mm respectively. As you can see, the height is notably more than that of the G Wagen. The width on the other hand is less. These make it look taller and more imposing than the Mercedes SUV. The ground clearance is 233mm, slightly less than the G. It could sometimes equal the G Wagen in the overall road presence.
Swipe through the carousel and you will also see a rear view of the two SUVs. The Gurkha looks taller, more butch and rugged than the G Wagon. While the G63 has a premium wheel cover for the tailgate-mounted spare wheel, the Gurkha has it naked.
Various Reddit users are seen commenting on the post. An interesting comment reads ‘The 5-door Gurkha is actually a 1 bhk apartment on wheels’ – this sounds logical considering the tall stance of the SUV with generous headroom inside. Another Redditor has commented ‘I wanna see this with Jimny’- a sight which we might not be comfortable seeing!
Did you know that the Gurkha has a Mercedes connection? It is powered by a 2.6-litre diesel engine that produces 140 PS and 320 Nm. This engine is a derivative of the Mercedes OM616 engine that was used on multiple Mercedes Benz models. This inline-four TCIC Common Rail diesel engine was quite popular. More interestingly, the W460 G Class sold between 1979 and 1991, had this engine in some markets. Though the German giant phased out this engine, Force continues to use it on the Gurkha. Thus, in a way, the present Gurkha is powered by the same engine as an old G Class!
The G63 AMG shown here, is powered by a 4.0L, biturbo V8 that produces 577 hp and 850 Nm. The latest generation with the EQ MHEV tech, offers a beefier 585 hp. The SUV is a true off-roader that excels equally on the tarmac as well.
The Reddit post also shows pictures of the Gurkha parked alongside other popular SUVs. It can be seen with a Thar 3-door that also happens to be its key rival and a Ford Endeavour. In all cases, it is the Gurkha that looks taller, and more rugged. A user has commented ‘The Endeavour looks like an Ecosport now’- taking a dig at the visual contrast.
It need to be noted that all the SUVs we see the Gurkha pose next to in these pictures, are proper SUVs and not overrated crossovers. It is due to its unique ‘tall-standing’ dimensions that the ‘Desi G’ manages to outsmart the visual signatures of these. Adding more fun to this discussion is that the caption for this post is ‘Big Daddy of SUVs’- a phrase made popular by a mainstream Indian SUV- the Scorpio-N. If it is a dig at the over-ambitious punchline or not- is something we let you decide…
