A lot of people in India, when they get caught by a traffic police officer for violating traffic laws, do one of two things. They either pay the fine legally by collecting a written receipt, or they pay a fraction of the original fine in cash as a bribe and get away with their deeds. Recently, a foreigner who has been living in Delhi for four years shared his experience of dealing with a cop who caught him after a minor violation. He explains what exactly happened to him and how he did not pay a single rupee in bribe.

The video, in which a foreigner talks about his experience of getting caught by a traffic police officer, has been shared on Instagram by Tim Fischer on his channel. It starts off with the man talking about his background in India. He mentions that for the last four years, he has been staying in Delhi, India, and has been enjoying it. The man then highlighted that over the years he has been caught by traffic police on multiple occasions.

However, there was one occasion that was unique, and he starts elaborating about it, which took place in South Delhi. Fischer mentions that one day, as he was driving in South Delhi, he came to a signal where he wanted to take a left turn. Now, in most places, the left turn is always legal to take even at a red light. However, this particular place had a sign that said no left turn on red signals, but he did not see it and took the left turn.

As a result of this, one of the police officers who was standing on the side of the road came and stopped Fischer’s car. He told him that what he did was illegal and that there is a Rs 5,000 fine for taking a left. The foreigner then apologized for his mistake and said that it was unintentional and he did not see the signage back there.

He then said that since he had made the mistake, he was ready to pay the Rs 5,000 fine. The traffic police officer, on the other hand, said that he could show him the sign where it said that taking a left turn was illegal at this signal. After this, Fischer told him that he understood the rule and was ready to pay the fine.

The police officer, however, then stated that since he was a foreigner and they wanted to be “nice to them,” he could just pay Rs 500 in cash and he would let him go. Fischer, on the other hand, said that he could not give cash and was ready to take the Rs 5,000 fine and pay it. After this, the police officer again told him that he would also have to take his licence and, as Fischer would have to go to court, it would be a hassle for him.

So the foreigner said that even though it would be a hassle for him, he would hire a driver and go to court to pay the fine. Following this, the police officer said that he could now just pay Rs 200 in cash and leave without any hassle. Once again, Fischer did not comply and said he did not have money to give and would pay the fine. The officer then told him to pay only Rs 100 in cash.

However, when Fischer again insisted on not paying the sum, the officer said he would take just Rs 50 and let him go. Finally, when the foreigner did not give him even Rs 50 in cash and wanted to take the fine, the police officer simply handed him his licence and went back to the spot where he was standing.

Bribing is wrong

Fischer, in his video, highlighted that he got the outcome he wanted without paying a single rupee. He added that the reason he did not pay the bribe was because he does not want the future generation to learn this practice. He added that bribing today ruins the future, as more people will be able to get away with breaking the law by paying a small bribe, which is not good for any place.
