When driving on highways, it is always suggested to use low beams, as the high beams can blind the vision of the incoming drivers. Generally, when the road is clear, people who get blinded are not affected much. However, when there is an obstacle on the road, this seemingly harmless use of high beams can cause a huge accident. Recently, showing exactly how this happens, a video has been shared online.

High beams can cause such accidents

This video, showing why using high beams on highways can cause dangerous accidents, has been shared on YouTube. It starts off with the shot of a few people on a highway in what appears to be a Toyota Etios sedan or Etios Liva hatchback. We can note that the single highway was completely empty except for a large vehicle coming from the opposite side.

It can also be noted that the driver of this particular vehicle on the opposite lane was using the high beams of his vehicle. Now, not thinking about it much, the driver of the car continued driving on the road normally. However, just when the other vehicle came next to the car, it can be seen that there was a bus parked in the middle of the lane on which the car was driving.

Unfortunately, because of the use of the high beams by the driver of the bus which was on the other side, the car driver could not take note of the parked bus at the correct moment. As a result of this, the driver crashed into the bus. Now, what exactly happened and if the occupants of this car were safe or not has not been reported.

Etiquettes of using high beams

Although high beams provide a lot more visibility on roads during night drives, it has to be mentioned that there are some etiquettes which need to be followed for driving with high beams turned on. First off, it has to be mentioned that high beams should be used when the vehicle is being driven on near-empty roads or rural roads where visibility is extremely poor.

Apart from this, whenever it can be seen that there are vehicles coming from the other side of the road, high beams should be changed to low beams. Also, when following a car very closely, high beams should not be used because they can cause glare from the interior rearview mirror and can blind the driver. Although not as strict in India, authorities can penalize the driver for misusing high beams on the road.

Creta and Thar drivers are infamous for using high beams

Although this issue of using high beams while being behind is not isolated to the drivers of the Hyundai Creta and Mahindra Thar, it has been noted by many that Creta and Thar drivers across the country use and abuse the high beams to make their way on the road. There have been numerous cases in which drivers of these cars come behind a vehicle and start using their high beams and low beams alternatively to move other drivers.
