Accidents have become extremely common on Indian roads, especially on highways. Also, as unfortunate as it may be, scams under the pretext of accidents have increased exponentially as well. Recently, a video has gone viral on the internet in which a person was seen lying in the middle of a highway with a crashed motorcycle. Now, whether this person was actually involved in an accident or was trying to scam a car on the highway is a big question.

A Real Accident or a Scam?

The video showing this scenario of a man lying in the middle of a national highway has been shared on Reddit. The short clip, which was recorded via a dashcam, shows a car being driven on a national highway at high speed. Suddenly, the driver spots something on the road. Due to this, he slows down his vehicle in order to avoid crushing it.

Following this, upon moving closer, it can be noted that there was a helmet and a bike along with an unconscious man on the road. The driver then slowly weaves across while taking a look at the person. He can also be heard asking the man on the road. However, he does not stop the vehicle or get out to physically check on the man.

Why Did the Driver Not Stop to Help?

As mentioned above, the number of scams taking place on public roads is increasing every day. Due to this, it has become extremely difficult to identify who actually needs help and who has deliberately staged an accident to scam unsuspecting drivers. Most likely, the driver of this particular car thought that it could be a similar scam setup. So, he did not stop the vehicle and continued his journey.

One of the netizens on this post stated, “Bro, these people are scammers. The moment you stop your car and put your window down to help the ‘injured,’ five people will come out of nowhere and start harassing you or trying to rob you. It has happened to me in a different state, which I will not mention. After this incident, I never drive at night except within the city.”

Apart from this person, a number of people also pointed out similar scams that have taken place with them or their relatives. However, there were a few netizens who also highlighted that it could have been a real accident as well. They stated that because of scammers, people who actually suffer during an accident cannot get help from strangers.

What Should Be Done in Such Situations?

If you are driving on a national highway and find yourself in a similar situation, we would suggest you not stop your vehicle. You can slow down and pin the location on your smartphone using Google Maps or WhatsApp. However, you should try to avoid stepping out of the vehicle.

Also, before doing anything, you should call 108, which is the free telephone number for emergency services in India. You can also inform the police authorities about the location of the accident and continue on your journey. This is because, if it is a scam setup, you could get extorted or even looted by individuals who generally hide nearby and wait for someone to stop.
