Cops In Force Gurkha Rescue Stuck Mahindra Thar: 4X4 vs Rear Wheel Drive (Video)

A lot of people really don’t understand the fact that rear-wheel-drive vehicles are not meant to go off-roading. These vehicles are not equipped with the necessary off-roading equipment. Unfortunately, people do not get this simple thing and still take their RWD vehicles on sand, mud, and ice. Recently, one such Mahindra Thar RWD owner got stuck on ice in Himachal Pradesh. Thankfully, his day was saved by the Himachal Pradesh Police authorities, who brought a Force Gurkha 4X4 to help them rescue this particular Thar.
A video showing this rescue of an RWD Mahindra Thar has been shared on Instagram. In this short video, we can note that a black-colored Mahindra Thar RWD was stuck on a road filled with heavy snow. What we can also note is that the Himachal Pradesh Police were called to the location where this particular Thar RWD was stuck.
The video shows that the Mahindra Thar was attached to the Force Gurkha, and it was then pulled out by the 4X4 SUV. The Gurkha then quickly rescues the Thar RWD, and we can see that it does the job effortlessly.
For those who may not be aware, back in May of 2023, the ICICI Foundation donated four Force Gurkha 4X4 SUVs to the Himachal Pradesh Police authorities. The flagging-off ceremony of this particular Force Gurkha was done by Himachal Pradesh CM Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on the 4th of May 2023. He highlighted that these vehicles will help the people stuck in the district of Lahaul and Spiti.
The 2025 Force Gurkha is offered in both three-door as well as five-door variants. It comes equipped with a 2.6-liter turbocharged diesel engine. The engine has been retuned for the new version, and it generates 138 bhp and 320 Nm of peak torque. This is a huge jump in power, especially when compared to the older version, which generated 91 bhp.
It comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, and it comes with 4×4 as standard. The SUV also offers front and rear locking differentials, an electronic dial with a shift-on-the-fly function, a 37-degree departure angle, and a 28-degree approach angle. The Force Gurkha also comes with features such as 18-inch alloy wheels, electrically adjustable ORVMs, and a metal ladder to access the roof rack.
The 2025 model also comes with a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, TPMS, a rear parking camera, rear parking sensors, a tilt and telescopic steering wheel, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, multiple USB ports, individual armrests, and many more features.
As mentioned above, RWD vehicles are not meant to be taken on snow, mud, or sandy surfaces. There are a number of reasons for this. The first is that these vehicles struggle with traction. All the weight on these cars is concentrated on the front end, so the rear wheels cannot get a firm grip on the surface and lose traction.
Additionally, these vehicles can become tricky to control, as all the power is sent to the rear wheels, which can drift the vehicle if not driven carefully. Now, if there is no alternative and you need to take your RWD vehicle on snow, make sure that all the tires have been equipped with snow chains. These chains help the tires get a better grip in snowy conditions and can help in driving in a controlled manner.
