Parking fails and associated mishaps are common in India. We have seen a lot of such incidents in the past. The latest one, shared by a user on Reddit is rather interesting and shows a Honda City sedan falling down from the first floor of a flat complex. The post is currently gathering a lot of attention online.

We don’t have clue on how and where this incident occurred. In the beginning of the video- essentially a CCTV footage, we see a White Honda City trying to enter the covered car parking space which is on the first floor. A few seconds into the video we see a Maroon Honda City (previous generation) breaking the wall and falling down from the first floor.

The sedan lands on its rear side and takes quite a hit. The shell, however, doesn’t deform. major impacts or deformations to the cabin could have killed if not severely injured the occupants. The fall and its impact throw the driver to the rear seat. This can be seen if you watch the video carefully.

Honda City Falls Down From Top Floor Parking: What Could Have Possibly Happened?

Upon closer inspection, this looks like a complete accident. It seems to have (likely) been caused by cleaner boys who tried to back up sitting on the driver’s seat and with the engine running. While doing so, they might have accidentally pressed the accelerator pedal instead of the brake.

The vehicle could have been in reverse and the same would have made it fall off the first floor parking area. The reason to believe this narrative is that the wipers of the car are in the raised position at the time of the fall- something which cleaners usually do.

Several Redditers have backed this narrative by citing their own examples and perspectives. They say that it is a common practice in many residential associations to give the vehicle keys to cleaners twice a month, so that they could clean the interior of the car.

In many places, cleaning boys often take this opportunity to drive around within the parking area, so that they get easy access to other vehicles – more like a cleaning mobile! One Redditor even says that the headlamps of his car were once left ON by the cleaner, and the same almost drained the battery.

Now comes the next big question: Can such a low speed crash break a concrete wall completely? A user who claims to be a civil engineer himself, has an answer for this question. He says that the wall here would probably be made of AAC blocks- which are lightweight cement blocks used in construction. The wall had no rebar in it.

Walls made of red bricks/cement bricks/acc blocks usually ditch the rebar, and it is not a bad practice. However, the vulnerability here is that the mortar (or adhesive for the blocks) is the only thing holding the bricks together. So they might not be able to withstand a car crash as concrete doesn’t have tensile strength.

This means the wall will have a split of joints when crashed. It will thus break. As some smart masons say ‘ the wall is there to guard you from wind, not from crashing vehicles’! And for the Honda City involved, the solid build and strong reinforcements used are to be appreciated.
