On one hand, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, says that roads in India will become better than those in the US. But on the other hand, the existing condition of highways and expressways is deteriorating. Most of the roads either have massive potholes or other defects like uneven levelling. Recently, a video showing how such bumps cause accidents — featuring a Hyundai Eon crashing — has been shared online.

Hyundai Eon crashes after driving over bumps on highway

This video, showing a Hyundai Eon losing control after jumping over bumps on a highway, has been shared on Reddit. It starts off with a Hyundai Eon hatchback driving at high speed on a two-lane highway. It can be noted that, from the view of the dashcam, the road appears to be fine and has no visible issues like potholes.

However, at one point, when the Eon overtakes the car with the dashcam, it goes over a massive bump on the road. Due to this bump and the vehicle’s speed being slightly on the higher side, it starts veering towards the right. As a result, the vehicle begins swerving towards the right side.

To avoid going off the road into the grass, the driver of the Eon swerves the vehicle towards the left. Unfortunately, after that, he is unable to lower the speed, causing the vehicle to go off the road. We can note that after going down, it crashes into an obstacle, which causes it to flip over. Presently, there are no images or reports of the aftermath of this accident.

Who is at fault?

From the video, it is clearly evident that this seemingly decent highway had a huge undulation or bump, which caused the accident. Most people driving on highways do not anticipate such bumps, and as a result, they drive at high speeds. Unfortunately, while making roads, the contractors responsible overlook such issues, which leads to accidents like this.

It also has to be mentioned that the driver was at some fault as well. Light hatchbacks like the Hyundai Eon are not designed for high-speed highway drives. So when driving such vehicles on highways, a responsible speed must be maintained so that the vehicle can be controlled in time during such events. Whether the occupants of this Hyundai Eon were safe or not has not been reported as of yet.

Netizens’ reactions

A number of netizens have criticized the government for not maintaining the highways properly. One of the netizens commented, “Gosh, hope all is well with the people travelling in the car. Now the onus is on the person/contractor who built this section of road. He should be held responsible for any bad patch or uneven bump on the road. Hope someone looks into it seriously. All people expect highways to be better than roads in the city.”

Another user cautioned others about speeding on national highways. The person wrote, “Indian roads are not suitable for high-speed driving; you have to be very defensive and aware of your surroundings.” Apart from these, many others highlighted that the negligence of the authorities is the major factor behind such accidents on Indian roads.
