Over the years, we have seen several car crashes, in which seatbelts and airbags have saved lives. In a recent incident shared on Reddit, a user describes how the Hyundai Verna he was travelling in was involved in what looks like a horrible crash. It crashed into a Honda City and both the cars were destroyed. However, airbags and seatbelts kept the occupants safe. He took to Reddit to explain the incident and advocate the use of seatbelts.

Hyundai Verna Vs Honda City Crash: What Happened

The Redditor who goes by the name Saatvik Jacob, explains the incident. The post has the title “Survived a brutal high-speed crash, thanks to seatbelts and airbags…” He says that he was travelling in his friend’s Hyundai Verna 1.6 diesel. From the visuals, we get to understand that this is the Verna Fluidic- an older-generation model. It used to offer up to 6 airbags on the top-spec variant.

The Redditor explains that his friend was driving the Verna on a wide 2-lane road, when a biker suddenly cut in front of them, without indicators or warning. The Verna driver did a panic braking and swerved. In the process, the sedan lost control and the car spun out, crashing into a Honda City that was coming towards it.

The crash destroyed both cars. The Verna and City took the impact and were almost obliterated. The Hyundai gave the City a side impact. Since both cars were equipped with airbags, the occupants remained safe. However, the Honda City occupants suffered multiple fractures. The Redditor’s friend who was driving the Verna Fluidic had muscle injuries and internal pain. These, he says, were from the seatbelts tightening on impact. Saatvik Jacob could walk out with a bloody nose and minor scars.

He further says that the seatbelts and airbags saved them. Both occupants of the Verna were buckled up at the time of the crash. Since there were only minor injuries, they could jump out of the windows post-crash. As he says, it doesn’t really matter how good or bad a driver you are, unprecedented situations like this could land you in trouble. Unpredictable situations such as this demand split-second decision-making. These can change everything. Towards the end of the post, Saatwik advocates the use of seatbelts. Being insouciant on public roads can even cost your life.

Seatbelts And Airbags: Why Are They Important?

Seatbelts are of supreme importance in ensuring safety on the roads. They are also the biggest and best defence against impaired, aggressive, and distracted drivers. If you are properly buckled up during a crash, the damages caused to your body would be minimal, as you tend to stay on your seats, without being completely ejected during the crash.

Most cars these days come equipped with multiple airbags. These offer added safety and ensure that the occupants don’t lose their lives or sustain major injuries. However, many see these as alternatives to seatbelts. This is absolutely wrong. In most cars, these wouldn’t deploy if you are not buckled.

If you are not wearing seatbelts and if the front airbags deploy, chances are there that they might throw you off the seat and land you in more injuries. These could even be fatal. Modern cars also come with seatbelt pre-tensioners which would offer added safety in the event of a crash, by mitigating the impact and tightening it.
