Hindustan Ambassador All Set To Make A Comeback: Fresh Details Surface

The Hindustan Ambassador is one of the most iconic names in Indian automotive history. It is one of those sedans that was once considered a status symbol. The Ambassador, as we know, was discontinued from the market in 2014 due to various reasons. The rights to the name were bought by Groupe PSA, which is owned by Stellantis. We have now come across a report suggesting that the Hindustan Ambassador will be coming back to India in 2026. Is it true? Let’s find out.
The Ambassador's comeback has been reported by ET Now on their Facebook page. Digital render images have been shared in the post along with a caption that says, “Hindustan Motors is set to revive the iconic Ambassador as an all-electric sedan, expected to launch in India by March 2026. Priced between ₹10-15 lakh, it will compete with the Tata Tigor EV, Tata Xpres-T EV, and Citroën eC3.”
The details in this report seem too good to be true. There are several reasons why we believe so. As mentioned above, the rights to the Ambassador name have been bought by Groupe PSA. Citroën is also part of this group, and the brand made its official entry into India back in 2017.
While the report mentions that the Ambassador in its EV form would be launching in March, we are yet to see a test mule of the upcoming sedan on Indian roads. The Ambassador is an iconic name, and in order to catch buyers’ attention, the brand will have to offer something unique.
The images seen in the post are actually digital renders. In fact, these are images created by DC2 when they had plans to revive the Ambassador as an electric car. We do not have any information or scoop available online about the upcoming Ambassador EV. There is only a year left for Citroën to work on and execute their plans for the Ambassador EV. It is not enough time, and if they hurry, we are afraid it will affect the final product.
There is a possibility that the Ambassador EV the manufacturer plans to launch in the market might not be a sedan at all. We say that because the sedan market share is declining in both the Indian and global markets. At a time like this, we wouldn’t be surprised if the Ambassador is reimagined as a crossover for better appeal.
Bringing back the Ambassador as an EV in the market is a better idea. An ICE version of the Ambassador may not do well, as there won’t be many takers for it. In EV form, many people who have a soft spot for the Ambassador brand may consider buying it. Citroën or Groupe PSA could adopt a retro design that many people associate with the Ambassador.
It is definitely going to be a bold experiment, but it would also be a unique product in the EV segment. As of now, no other brand has tested the retro-modern formula for EVs.
The Bajaj Chetak scooter made a comeback in the market as an EV and has been doing well since then. The Ambassador carries similar brand value, and there is a chance that it may actually succeed.
If they manage to launch the EV in the ₹10-15 lakh bracket as claimed in the post, it might actually do well for the brand.
As mentioned above, there is still a lot for Citroën or Groupe PSA to figure out, and launching a new car in such a short span of time seems unlikely. In short, we don’t think the Ambassador EV will be launched in 2026. We don’t even know whether the Ambassador EV will be a sedan or a crossover. With declining sedan sales in India, launching the Ambassador as a sedan may not be the best idea.
