The Mahindra Thar has a place of its own among Indians. It continues to be the dream vehicle of many. The 5-door version- ROXX has only built on the Thar's popularity. This ROXX owner has bought the rare-to-find petrol-automatic variant of the ROXX. He seems to have made the choice due to various reasons, mostly rooted in personal preferences. He admits that the petrol automatic ROXX deliver up to 10 kpl on highways. Mileage inside the city would stand much lower. He gets an average mileage of 8kpl in city hauls.

This owner works in the oil and gas industry and even plans to convert the ROXX into CNG after a few years, when the kits and technology become more advanced!

Mahindra launched the Thar ROXX in India on August 15, 2024. The SUV is underpinned by the carmaker's new-age M-GLYDE platform. This architecture uses modern tech and hardware like Frequency Dependent Damping, penta-link rear suspension with Watts linkage. These work together in giving the SUV commendable handling.

It comes with two engine options- 2.2L mHawk diesel and 2.0 mStallion turbo petrol. Both manual and automatic transmission options are offered on both powertrains. The ROXX has both RWD (Rear Wheel Drive) and 4WD (Four Wheel Drive) variants on sale. 4WD comes only on higher variants.

The diesel engine has an output of 172.5 bhp and 370 Nm. The petrol engine that's being talked about here, is a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder unit which produces 175 hp and 380 Nm when mated to the 6-speed torque converter gearbox. It is quite fast and fun to drive. The petrol ROXX has ARAI-certified mileage figures of 12.4 kmpl on both manual and automatic variants.

Another practical difference between the petrol and diesel iterations of the ROXX is the diesel's upper hand in stability and dynamics, due to the powertrain's added weight compared to the petrol engine. The additional mass sitting atop the front axle, gives the ride a firmer, more planted feel. This ROXX owner admits this as well.

He further seems to have a complaint about the Ivory cabin colours of the ROXX. Mahindra offers the Mocha Brown interior colourway only on the top-spec diesel 4x4 variants. It isn't available on any of the petrol variants.

The ROXX excels with its cabin design, room and the feature list. Mahindra launched an updated ROXX lineup earlier this year, packing more features and useful revisions to existing ones. The SUV got keyless entry, a sliding function for the front passenger-side armrest, and more aerodynamic wipers as part of the update.

The feature list on the ROXX now consists of ventilated front seats, a large 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster, a 9-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, a panoramic sunroof, a wireless phone charger, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, multi-zone climate control, automatic headlights and wipers, and more.

Talking of safety equipment, the SUV features six (standard) airbags, a 360-degree camera, an electronic parking brake with an auto-hold function, disc brakes on all four wheels, TPMS and Level 2 ADAS.

In the Indian market, the prime rival of the Thar ROXX is the Force Gurkha 5-door. Today, the prices of the ROXX start at ₹12.99 lakh (ex-showroom) and go up to ₹23.09 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top-spec.
