Mahindra Thar ROXX Waiting Period Hits 1.5 Years!

The Thar ROXX has already been a massive success for Mahindra. The SUV that made its debut on August 15, 2024 is in high demand today. The manufacturer started accepting bookings on October 3rd when over 1.76 lakh units were sold in just under an hour. Bookings for the 5-door Thar are soaring, and so is the waiting period. A recent ROXX order reveals the waiting period to have touched 1.5 years- as the official communication states the estimated delivery to be in May 2026!
Threads on Team-BHP show multiple such cases in which ROXX owners have been given tentative waiting periods of over a year. If you are a regular reader of this website, you will remember that this is something we had predicted long back, when Mahindra opened bookings for the SUV. We had solid Math to support our hypothesis. It is bittersweet to see it realised weeks after being proposed…
Mahindra had during the official media drives, stated that they would have a certain number of units ready at the time of start of bookings. They did not, however, give a number. The manufacturer makes the Thar at its Nashik facility. The plant can produce a total of 9,500 Thars every month. This, by the way, is the combined figure of both the Thar (3-door) and the Thar ROXX. The internal split further is 6500 units of ROXX and 3,000 units of the 3-door every month.
Even if we consider the reserve stock to be odd 30,000 units, 1.76 lakh is still a lot to catch up on. With demand and bookings only rising with time, it was obvious that the waiting time would soon reach a year or two. If the immediate dispatch numbers were any less, the only way for waiting spans would be up!
The Mahindra Thar ROXX offers a broad lineup with 18 variants across six main trims, adding more options for buyers. It has seven exterior colors: Stealth Black, Tango Red, Everest White, Deep Forest, Nebula Blue, Battleship Grey, and Burnt Sienna. The interior of the 4×4 variants comes in two colors- Ivory and Mocha, the latter being introduced after feedback for a dirt-friendly option for off-road enthusiasts. Deliveries of the Mocha variants will begin only in January 2025. However, aftermarket shops have already started building custom Mocha interiors for the vehicle.
Available only on the MX5, AX5L, and AX7L trims, the 4WD hardware ensures a solid off-road experience, with 4WD Automatic exclusive to the AX5L and AX7L trims. Prices for the Thar ROXX begin at ₹12.99 lakh for the base petrol variant and ₹13.99 lakh for the entry-level diesel, with the top-end 4WD variant priced at ₹22.49 lakh (all prices ex-showroom).
The five-door ROXX is larger than its three-door version, featuring a distinctive design that includes a ‘6-pack’ grille, new wheels, LED DRLs, and pillar-mounted rear door handles. Inside, the spacious cabin boasts features like a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, digital driver display, wireless charging, automatic AC, a Harman Kardon 9-speaker audio system, ventilated front seats, rear AC vents, and a panoramic sunroof.
Built on Mahindra’s M-GLYDE platform, the Thar ROXX shares its engine and transmission options with the Scorpio-N. It comes with the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel and the 2.0-litre mStallion petrol engines, both available with manual and automatic transmissions.
