Almost all the cities and towns in India face waterlogging when it pours down heavily. A lot of people, despite knowing that water can damage their vehicles by locking the engine or causing electrical issues, still drive on such roads. The result is that vehicles get stranded on these roads. Recently, a video was shared online in which a Rs 4.5 crore Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG was seen stuck in an underpass filled with water, and this has now gone viral.

This video, showing a Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG stranded in a waterlogged underpass, has been shared on Instagram by Tricity Updates on their channel. We can observe that the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG luxury SUV was parked in the middle of the waterlogged road. As per the video, it is the Sector-15 underpass, and during heavy rainfall, it gets completely filled.

It appears that the vehicle got stuck after crossing the deepest part of the underpass filled with water. The video shows that the LED DRLs of this SUV were still on, which means that the electrical system of the vehicle was still functional. We can also note that the driver of this SUV was still inside it while it was stranded.

How can a G-Wagen get stuck despite its high water-wading capacity?

Most people who love the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG or G-Wagen know that, from the factory, it comes with a water-wading capacity of 700 mm or 27.6 inches, which, in comparison to many other capable off-roaders, is a lot. However, this vehicle getting stranded in water despite this capacity is very odd.

Some experts believe that one of the possible reasons for this G-Wagen to stop on this road could be the detection of water by one or a few different sensors. The G-Wagen comes with multiple sensors, including the Mass Airflow Sensor, Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor, crankshaft and camshaft position sensors, fuel injection timing sensors, and others.

Generally, when these sensors detect moisture, they cut the power supply to the engine to prevent damage. On the other hand, there is also speculation that the engine of this vehicle might have suffered from hydrostatic lock, which, in common terms, is called hydrolock.

What happens in a hydrolock is that water enters the engine’s combustion chamber, and as water is non-combustible, it bends the connecting rods, cracks the pistons, and also destroys the crankshaft. Most likely, in the case of this G-Wagen, the water in the middle of the underpass was much more than 700 mm, and it managed to reach the engine, which eventually caused it to fail.

Never drive on waterlogged roads

During the monsoon season, there are a number of videos showing Mahindra Thars, Scorpio-Ns, Toyota Fortuners, and Hiluxes driving through waterlogged roads. This then inspires other people to do the same when they come across similar roads.

However, it has to be noted that in all videos there is no clarity on how deep the water was, and even if it can be seen, there are several other factors that save these vehicles. Unfortunately, not everyone’s vehicle can be saved, and this causes cases like the one above. So it is better to avoid such roads during the monsoon season.

Always opt for engine protect plus while buying insurance

We all know that the engine is the most expensive part in a vehicle which needs to get replaced in case of a hydrolock. So in order to avoid paying for this expensive part, one should always opt for Engine Protect Plus while buying car insurance. This particular add-on cover protects your engine and its parts from damage that is not covered by a standard comprehensive policy.

In case a hydrolock, of this add-on is added in the policy, the insurance company pays for a water ingress damage, lubrication or oil leakage damage and it also pays for the engine parts replacements. So next time you buy a vehicle or buy a new policy for your existing vehicle make sure that you have opted for the engine protect plus add-on.
