Mumbai has one of the largest populations of expensive and exotic cars in the country. We have many celebrities and businessmen who own sports cars and supercars. On weekends, many of them drive their prized possessions on the road, and we have seen several videos from car spotters too. However, it looks like people are not enjoying the loud supercars as much as the owners. They have now filed a complaint with the local police, and cops have assigned two interceptors on Mumbai Coastal Road to catch speeding cars.

Interceptor on Coastal Road

Local residents have come forward against the supercars that race up and down the 10 km stretch between Marine Drive and Worli late at night. This happens mostly on weekends as the roads are usually busy during weekdays. Many people have even posted videos of these cars with loud exhausts on the coastal road. The complaints also pointed out that these cars are not only being driven fast but are also extremely loud, violating noise pollution rules and disrupting designated silent zones, including spots near hospitals.

Anil Kumbhare, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said, “Currently, the coastal road is not entirely covered by Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras. Once it is, we will be able to take immediate action against violators. Until then, these interceptor vehicles will help curb speeding on this stretch.”

Interceptors are very common on our highways. These mobile units help officers track the speed of vehicles on highways. They can also issue challans by clicking the image of an overspeeding vehicle.

The speed limit for vehicles on the coastal road is 80 kmph. Inside the tunnel, the speed limit is 60 kmph, and on turns, it is 40 kmph. Any vehicle that exceeds these limits or is being driven recklessly will be caught by the interceptor.

Most sports cars in India come with a sporty exhaust. The sound from the exhaust only gets louder when they are driven fast, as it is part of the car’s character. Many car owners don’t find time or space during the day to drive their cars fast. Because of this, they choose a time after dark.

This way, they can avoid traffic and enjoy the drive in their exotic cars. However, it should be noted that these cars are currently being called a nuisance by locals because they are affecting their lives. Many cars even use extremely loud aftermarket exhausts, which are not suitable for road use.

Additionally, these cars are allegedly racing on the Coastal Road, which is illegal. This is a public road, and racing on public roads is an offense. There have been incidents in the past in Mumbai and other parts of the country where supercars have been involved in crashes due to reckless driving.

By driving fast, the owners of these supercars are not only putting their own lives at risk but also the lives of other road users. If you really want to race, there are several race tracks in India that allow you to book the track for a day and polish your racing skills. We hope that the news of these interceptors on the Coastal Road has reached supercar owners and they would avoid the night drives to avoid any issues.
