When we think of a road getting flooded during heavy rains, mostly normal roads come to mind. However, you'd be surprised to know that in Mumbai, the city of dreams, a flyover was seen getting flooded. Yes, you read that right. A flyover got flooded, and what's even more surprising is that this flyover was inaugurated just two months ago in June. At the time, this flyover was called an engineering marvel as it was designed with three lanes.

Two-month-old flyover flooded

The video showing the two-month-old flyover being flooded with rainwater has been shared on X by The Skin Doctor on their page. In this short video, we can note that the Vikhroli flyover with three lanes was filled with water at the starting point. It can be seen that most vehicles were stopped on the flyover while getting off it because they did not want to cross the flooded portion.

Only one car climbing up the flyover was crossing the waterlogged portion of the Vikhroli East-West flyover. As stated, this particular flyover was inaugurated back in June of this year. At the time of its inauguration, it was highlighted that this flyover was an engineering marvel, with three lanes and no divider, to reduce traffic congestion.

How can a two-month-old flyover get flooded?

Well, the simple answer is that this so-called “engineering marvel” flyover does not have a drainage system designed well enough to disperse large amounts of rainwater. At the moment, there are no reports on whether the firm responsible for the design of this flyover has been summoned or not. However, most likely, like in all other cases, nothing will be done.

Netizens’ reactions

A number of netizens have raised their voices against this blatant design flaw of the engineering marvel flyover located in Vikhroli. One of the users of the platform commented, “Waterlogging is the single most critical factor which reduces the integrity of any concrete-based structure. The same issue is seen on so many newly constructed bridges across the NHAI network.”

He added, “I do not have an engineering background, but I keep wondering: how come engineers/designers of these multi-thousand-crore projects fail to apply the basic principles so many times? Is it down to incompetence or willful negligence? Are these structures not meant to have any inspection post-construction to make sure they have fulfilled all the criteria stipulated in the original tender? Does that mean even inspectors are involved... then I just stop thinking :)”

90-degree flyover from Bhopal

bhopal rob

The Vikhroli flyover is not the only engineering marvel we have seen in recent times. A few months ago, a flyover in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, went viral on the internet. The main reason behind it becoming famous was that the engineers who designed it thought it might be a genius move to make a 90-degree turn on a flyover.

This particular flyover is located in the Aishbagh area of Bhopal. Thankfully, soon after the images of this overbridge went viral online, the Madhya Pradesh government took action and suspended seven engineers, including two chief engineers of the Public Works Department, for the faulty design of this flyover.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav stated, “I took cognisance of the serious negligence in the construction of the Aishbagh ROB and ordered an inquiry. On the basis of the inquiry report, action has been taken against eight PWD engineers.”
