In the last one month, we have been seeing reports from different parts of the country about heavy rains, especially in states like Maharashtra, Kerala, Gujarat, and Goa. Thanks to these rains, we have also been able to identify issues in roads that are either newly constructed or currently under construction.

Here, we have another report from Nagpur, Maharashtra, where a newly built railway overbridge caved in due to heavy rain even before its inauguration.

The video has been shared by Drishti Sharma Mulak on her X profile. She is a journalist who works with Lokmat Times. In this video, the reporter talks about a newly constructed ROB (railway overbridge) in Kamptee, Nagpur, Maharashtra.

She calls it a failed project, as the roads collapsed or caved in even before their official inauguration. The video shows a portion of the newly constructed flyover simply caving in due to heavy rains. The structure was built only recently, and just like many constructions in India, the authorities were taking their own time to complete it.

The report mentions that the work on this flyover was carried out by a special projects division under the PWD, and the civil work was executed by a private company. The overall cost of the project was around ₹65 crore. All of this is taxpayers’ money, and this is not the first time we’ve come across an incident like this.

After the media started reporting about the caved-in sections of the road, the team responsible decided to fix it. In the video, we can clearly see that the roads were repaired within 12 hours. This is yet another example highlighting the poor quality of newly constructed roads in India.

The reporter questions: if the road was so easily damaged by rain, was it even built to last? She also asks who will be held responsible for these mistakes. Will the contractor who carried out the work be banned, or will the authorities take any action against them?

The saddest part is that this railway overbridge had not even been inaugurated for public use. If this had happened after the inauguration, it could have caused several accidents.

Recently, we also saw a report from Vadodara, Gujarat, where the Mujpur-Gambhira bridge collapsed. Almost 19 people lost their lives in that accident, and a couple of those who fell into the river are still missing.

A preliminary investigation identified structural failure as the cause of the accident. The bridge was over four decades old. Prior to the collapse, several media outlets had reported on the bridge’s pathetic condition.

The railway overbridge was supposed to improve the lives of people in the area. However, such low-quality work will only make their lives more difficult. Hopefully, the concerned authorities will come across this report and take the necessary action against those responsible.

In Maharashtra alone, there have been several reports where people have raised concerns about the quality of road construction some of them are actually on national highways and newly constructed expressways.
