Tata Harrier.ev is currently the talking point on the internet. As part of the promotion, Tata released several commercials for the EV. They drove the SUV to the top of a steep hill and even did a tablecloth pull challenge. After these videos went viral, many people started creating content around it and even began attempting such stunts. Here we have one such video where an old Tata Sierra owner attempts to do a tablecloth pull challenge inspired by the Harrier.ev. Was he successful? Let’s find out.

The video has been shared by Moto Sapien on their Instagram page. In this video, the vlogger arranges a table just like the one seen in the tablecloth challenge in the Harrier.ev commercial. He sets the table with several glasses filled with drinks. He also places several plates with fruits.

The idea was to recreate the stunt done by the Harrier.ev. All these items are spread on a small table with a cloth placed over it. One end of the tablecloth is tied to a rope, which is attached to the Sierra. The vlogger wanted to see if it was just the Harrier.ev that could do this stunt, or if his old Tata Sierra would also be able to pull it off.

The vlogger gets into the Sierra, tries to launch the car from the starting point, and picks up speed as fast as possible. The Sierra, as we know, was not the fastest vehicle in the market when launched, and over the years, its performance has declined. However, the long rope gave the Sierra enough time to pick up speed. Finally, when the rope pulled the cloth over the table, it slid over the table without actually spilling the drinks and food on it.

This means the 20+ year-old Sierra was able to pull off this trick easily. However, if you watch the video closely, you’ll realise that although the trick was successfully executed, it lacked finesse. The glasses and plates moved a lot compared to the original stunt.

Why did that happen? Well, there are multiple reasons. One of them is that the Sierra was unable to pick up enough speed to do this stunt smoothly. Also, the stunt was done in an open area, and it was quite windy. Even wind can affect the results in such tests.

What is the science behind it?

The tablecloth stunt is just pure physics. For those who are not aware, this is actually related to Newton’s First Law of Motion. The Law of Inertia, as we all know it, states that an object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced external force. In simpler terms, objects resist changes to their state of motion.

In this case, the tablecloth is the object on which the force is applied. When the cloth is pulled quickly, the friction between the cloth and the dishes is not enough to overcome their inertia. The dishes resist the change and remain in place.
