The Pune RTO department, in order to crack down on vehicles and their owners violating traffic rules, has now inducted four new AI-enabled, radar-equipped Mahindra Scorpio Classic SUVs into its fleet. These vehicles will be deployed across the city and will intercept vehicles breaking traffic rules, following which the owners will be sent fines depending upon the violations.

Recently, a video showing the installation of the AI cameras and other systems into these Mahindra Scorpio Classics was shared on Facebook by Punekar News on their page. It starts off with a white Mahindra Scorpio Classic parked with its tailgate open. We can note that the vehicle has been fitted with a white-colored mount, and inside it are special processors for the AI-enabled camera and radar.

Additionally, on the right jump seat, we can also note a few other pieces of equipment. The clip then shows the rear end of another Scorpio Classic with RTO written on the tailgate. This particular vehicle was equipped with a white box with a glass cover, and inside it was a camera, and just beside it was a radar. The clip then shows a technician fitting the same system on another Scorpio Classic.

What is this AI-enabled camera and radar system?

In total, there are four interceptor Mahindra Scorpio Classics that have been fitted with these cameras and radar systems. The core technology powering these vehicles is the Mobile Tracking Enforcement System (MTES). Each of these SUVs gets radar sensors for tracking high-speed vehicles and HD cameras to capture violations in real time.

They also get speed detectors that measure overspeeding accurately. Additionally, infrared lights, which will help in functioning properly at night and in foggy conditions, have been installed as well. Lastly, to enable communication between the department and officers on duty, a wireless communication system has also been added to these SUVs.

With these four interceptor vehicles, the Pune RTO department will detect violations such as overspeeding, lane cutting or zigzag driving, riding without a helmet, and driving without a seatbelt. Also, all other reckless driving activities will be captured by these SUVs to ensure that people breaking traffic laws can be punished quickly and effectively.

Challan process

The Pune RTO interceptors will automatically process the challans of offenders caught violating traffic rules. Firstly, the radar will detect the violation, and then the number plate will be scanned instantly. After that, vehicle details will be auto-verified from the RTO database, and an e-challan will then be generated and sent directly to the offender's mobile phone.

Currently, the RTO department is only able to detect 10–12 violations per hour. However, with these new AI-enabled camera and radar vehicles, the department will be able to detect and process around 700–900 violations per hour. Currently, these vehicles will be deployed on highways and major city roads.

Following this, if these vehicles are a success, more of them will be added to the fleet in Pune and will also be deployed in other cities in Maharashtra. The RTO department, with these new vehicles, aims to reduce rash driving and bring down accident rates. They will also help in improving law enforcement and building a stronger case for AI adoption in traffic management.
