Road accidents are on the rise in India. Governmental efforts are already underway to raise awareness and promote road safety. Various campaigns are being conducted in different parts of the country. An interesting example comes from Siliguri. Garidhura traffic guard has set up an installation in Darjeeling, that intends to promote road safety by urging them to drive carefully and safely.

The installation shows a Maruti Omni. It looks like the vehicle was involved in an accident. The glass areas have all been shattered. The exterior gets White paint, and 'blood stains' can be seen on the vehicle. Dummies can also be seen inside the Omni, which look like the victims.

The installation is traumatic and resembles a real crash to a great extent. It almost looks like a scene from some horror movie. Behind the Omni, you can also see a board that reads 'Garidhura Traffic Guard, Rohini More, Darjeeling.' and ' Safe Drive, Save Life'.

The comment reads "Indonesia also has 2 famous accident monuments, the first is a Toyota Kijang car which is an accident involving 4 BATAN (National Nuclear Energy Agency) employees and 2 motorcycles (Yamaha Vega and Yamaha Jupiter Z) which were victims of fatal accidents. Both monuments are located in Wates, Yogyakarta."

Gadkari Explains Why Road Accidents in India Are Rising?

nitin gadkari on road safety

Speaking at the Global Road Infratech Summit & Expo (GRIS), Gadkari said that poor road design and faulty infrastructure are major reasons behind increasing accident counts and rising death tolls. He said "Most of the road accidents happen in the country due to small civil mistakes, faulty DPRs, and nobody is held accountable.”

The minister further urged that construction agencies should adopt modern technology and sustainable materials. Gadkari also said that many roads in India do not meet the set standards and often lack proper signage and markings.

In another speech, the minister pointed out that the biggest challenge in ensuring road safety is the widespread lack of respect for laws among people. According to him, citizens no longer fear legal consequences or penalties, which encourages reckless behavior on the roads. This attitude contributes to frequent violations such as jumping red signals, riding without helmets, and neglecting seatbelts.

One of the most alarming statistics Gadkari shared is that around 30,000 people in India lose their lives every year simply because they were not wearing seatbelts during a crash. Despite repeated warnings and awareness campaigns, many still ignore this basic safety measure, putting themselves at high risk in case of an accident.

He also acknowledged a grim reality—India recorded around 1.68 lakh road accident deaths in 2024 alone. This is despite continuous government efforts to reduce fatalities through awareness programs, improved infrastructure, and stricter laws. He emphasized that a lack of effective enforcement of traffic rules also lead to heightened accident rates.

While road safety campaigns and regulations exist, Gadkari believes that without strict enforcement, they remain ineffective. He urged authorities to ensure proper implementation of rules and called for a shift in public mindset.
