In an unfortunate incident, a speeding BMW Z4 rammed into a Tata Punch before crashing into a divider. The sportscar was being driven by a 20-year-old and reportedly had another child in the co-driver seat. The driver, named Sukhwinder Singh was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the crash. The police has initiated a probe.

The incident happened near the Delhi Gate area on Thursday afternoon (at around 3pm). Witnesses say that the car was overspeeding and hit an autorickshaw before ramming into the Tata Punch. It further went on and crashed into a divider. The BMW dragged along for 100-odd meters from the point of collision, as per an ANI report.

The incident thankfully did not injure any passerby. Even the Punch occupants seem to have survived without any scratch. The BMW driver, however, had minor injuries. The co-driver, as per witness statements, suffered facial injuries, as his head hit the dashboard in the crash.

Locals and the cops soon reached the scene and initiated rescue operations. The local police soon initiated a probe to find out the cause of the crash and also to examine if the BMW driver was intoxicated. A case has been registered against him for reckless and dangerous driving on public roads, at the IP Estate Police Station.

The Z4 was registered under the name of Mintu Singh, a resident of the Laxmi Nagar area, but had Aas Mohammad as the second owner. This person recently faced an externment action and is not even allowed to enter Delhi. It thus has a notorious history.

The Tata Punch was travelling towards Delhi gate from ITO, on the way to the Old Delhi area. The speeding BMW hit the car and led to it losing balance. Crashing into the divider brought serious damage to the BMW Z4. Rescuers had to break open the sportscar to get the occupants out.

Talking about the car, the Z4 is a two-door convertible sportscar powered by a 3.0L six-cylinder petrol engine. The powertrain here is capable of producing 300hp and 400 Nm. This RWD roadster has enough oomph to get to top speeds of 250kph. This also calls for responsible driver behaviour. This is not a car anyone can randomly take for a spin. Poor driver skills can lead to a loss of control and potential crashes.

Road Accidents On The Rise

Road accident rate has been climbing in recent times. Along with this, the number of crashes caused by intoxicated drivers too have been on the rise. This is an alarming trend. Recently a drunk Audi driver rammed his car into a Tata Harrier and then continued to hit a series of vehicles including a three-wheeler and a Tata Nexon before crashing into a barricade and coming to a complete halt. The enraged public thrashed the driver before handing him over to the cops.

In another horrifying incident, six MBBS students were killed in a road accident in Kerala’s Alappuzha. The Chevrolet Tavera that they were travelling in collided with a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus, on a night with a heavy downpour.

Government’s Approach To Rising Road Accidents: Gadkari Reacts

The government has been devising ways to reduce road accident counts in India. Various initiatives like the ones to reduce blind spots, ensuring stricter enforcement of traffic rules, and improving infrastructure are all being undertaken by the government. However, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari says that the rising accident death counts is due to deliberate negligence or because of people’s lack of respect for the laws.
