The build quality of a vehicle is something that many car owners consider when buying a new or used car. They often look for safety ratings and sturdy build quality. When we talk about build quality, Indian brands like Tata and Mahindra often come to mind first. Apart from these two brands, other manufacturers also produce sturdy vehicles. Here, we have a video showing a Mahindra Thar and a Tata Altroz crashing into each other on a public road, causing traffic congestion. How did these vehicles perform in the crash? Let’s check the video to find out.

The video was shared by a user on YouTube. The accident occurred last week in Kerala’s Kozhikode district. The exact reason for the crash is unknown; however, it appears to be a head-on collision. In the video, we see the front of the Tata Altroz hatchback and the Mahindra Thar damaged in the crash.

It should be noted that both the Mahindra Thar and Tata Altroz have performed well in Global NCAP crash tests. The Mahindra Thar scored 4-star ratings, while the Altroz scored a full five stars. Let’s start with the Tata Altroz. The bonnet of the hatchback is damaged. The front bumper and the driver’s side fender are crumpled.

Additionally, it seems the radiator or coolant of the Altroz is broken, and the headlamps are also damaged. The airbags appear to have deployed on time. Next is the Mahindra Thar.

The SUV managed to perform quite well in the crash. The impact did not reach the cabin at all, but the front bumper, grille, fender, and bonnet are damaged. The Mahindra Thar also has a damaged front axle and wheel. The A-pillars on both vehicles remain intact, and both cars have managed to perform very well.

Thar & Altroz crash

The occupants of both vehicles escaped the crash without any injuries. The comment section is filled with people praising the build quality of both vehicles. However, there is a major misconception among people that the strength of the external skin or body panels determines the build quality.

This is not entirely true. Body panels are made from metal sheets, which are designed to have flex. These panels are simply design elements of a vehicle and are meant to crumple in the event of an accident. It is actually the frame or chassis of the car that absorbs the impact. If the chassis is not strong, a sturdy-looking body panel is of no use.

In this case, while the body panels of both the Tata Altroz and Mahindra Thar are damaged, their frames or chassis are strong enough to handle the impact in the event of an accident. Therefore, the saying “Never judge a book by its cover” applies here: never judge the build quality of a car by the flex of its body panels.

Accidents happen on the road, and in India, it is always a good idea to stay alert. Always follow defensive driving techniques to minimize the risk of an accident. Also, always wear seat belts while driving to ensure your safety in the event of a crash.
