Airbags are one of the most effective safety features that help save people’s lives during serious accidents. However, the same airbags can be detrimental for kids who are seated in the front seats. In the event of an accident, kids can get severely injured by the deployment of airbags. Recently, showing how airbags can injure kids, a video has been shared online. In this video, two young kids sitting in the front seat of a Tata Nexon, which collided with a Volkswagen Polo, were seen getting injured.

Kids Get Injured Due to Airbags

This video, showing the aftermath of a terrible accident, has been shared on X by Drivesmart. In the short clip, we can see that a Tata Nexon and a Volkswagen Polo were involved in a terrible crash on the Mysuru Expressway. It shows a man coming out of the driver’s seat of the Nexon.

We can also observe that he was bringing out his young child from the car, who was bleeding. The child was crying and unable to stand properly. The video also shows the man taking out his other infant, who was also involved in the accident. The man’s wife was also seen coming to check on the kids.

What Happened?

This particular incident, as mentioned, took place on the Bangalore-Mysore Expressway on October 13th. It all started when a white Volkswagen Polo driving on the other side of the expressway lost control. The driver was traveling at around 60 km/h when he encountered a waterlogged patch on the road.

Due to this, the Polo hydroplaned on the expressway and hit the divider in the middle. Following this impact, it was launched almost 10 feet into the air and ended up on the extreme left side of the expressway. Unfortunately, in the same lane, this particular white Tata Nexon was being driven at a normal speed.

Soon after, the Polo and the Nexon had a head-on collision, resulting in the deployment of airbags. In most cases, this would be an ideal situation for airbags to deploy. However, in this scenario, the Nexon driver was sitting with his son on his lap in the driver’s seat.

Meanwhile, his wife in the front passenger seat was sitting with the other infant. So during the collision, when the airbags deployed, both adults were saved and did not suffer any major injuries. However, both kids sustained bleeding due to the impact of the airbags.

Thankfully, the kids were rescued in time, and other vehicles stopped to check on the people involved in the accident. However, this brings us to a very important message: we request all parents to please invest in proper child seats. It is crucial that kids are not made to sit on laps in the front seats.

Why Children Should Not Sit in Front Seats?

We are passing this message on because people do not take this important issue seriously. Just a few days ago, a two-year-old girl died in Kerala after an accident involving airbag deployment. In that incident, the infant was on her mother’s lap when the car collided with a truck.

During the accident, the airbags deployed, saving the parents. However, as the girl was very young, she suffocated due to the airbags and died. The front airbags of a car are designed to protect adults, and as seen in the Kerala incident, they can become fatal for kids. So make sure that kids are never seated in the front seats.

Importance of Child Seats

As stated above, if you have a young child, please invest in a high-quality child seat. These seats, which can be fixed on the rear seats with ISOFIX mounts, are designed to protect children during accidents. They reduce the impact experienced by kids.

Even if you don’t have a child seat, make sure the kids are seated in the rear seats, as they are the safest for children. People in India often do not follow this rule, but in the event of an accident, it can help determine the outcome.

It should also be noted that if a child is present inside the car, always try to drive slowly and pay attention to the road at all times. Accidents can happen at any time and place, so it is better to be very cautious while driving.
