The winter is almost here and many parts of North India have started experiencing fog ( and smog)- something that would limit driver visibility to a great extent. It is thus common for more crashes to occur and the road accident rate to climb during this season. In a recent incident, a Tata Tiago CNG crashed into the back of a truck and was rear ended by a Hyundai Aura which was further rear ended by a Swift! The unhurt Tiago driver recorded and shared a video detailing the crash, soon after it occurred.

The Tiago owner- Mrityunjay Vats was travelling from Meerut to Shamli, and was descending a flyover at a not-so-high speed (which he says was around 40 kph), through the fast lane. He suddenly saw a truck on his lane, also shedding speed.

It stopped in front of him before he could do anything. It is extremely common for trucks to drive on the fast lane, in India. (You are welcome!) Most of them do not even care about taking the left lane or further to give proper signals (turn indicators for example) before attempting a lane-change.

Circling back to the crash, the truck here had no brake lights or indicators that would warn the following vehicle of its intention to stop. Due to the smog, visibility was poor too. There was thus no way for the Tiago driver to avoid a crash. It ran into the back of the truck within the blink of an eye, and was also rear ended by the Aura some time later. The chain of crashes did not stop there. A White Maruti Swift further crashed into the Aura!

Going by the visuals, the impact was sizeable and all three cars should have been carrying decent speeds. The Tiago took the biggest hit. It had 3 occupants at the time of the crash that crushed it into a ball of debris!

Despite the vehicle getting totaled, all of its occupants survived without major injuries. The driver even filmed a video right after getting out of the debris and shared it on social media ! (Indians and their obsession with social media is incredible indeed!)

He shared the details of the crash, explaining how it occurred. He seems to be happy to have the escaped the crash unhurt and says he will continue to trust Tata vehicles and the safety they offer. The Tiago holds a four-star safety rating in Global NCAP crash tests, and comes with airbags and various other safety features.

It should also be noted that the vehicle involved in this crash is a CNG-powered Tiago. CNG vehicles generally pose a greater risk in the event of a crash. But seems like Tata Motors has lived up to its claims of CNG vehicle safety, as the cylinder here can be seen safe and intact, despite the car having to meet with an ill fate as this.

The visuals make it clear that the front impact wasn’t too major. The front occupants, who were wearing seatbelts at that time, could walk out unhurt, while those at the rear took slightly more impact as they were not wearing seatbelts.

All of them seem to have rushed out of the car as soon as the frontal impact occurred, and before the tailing vehicles rammed into the hatchback. This saved souls seated at the rear from getting crushed. It was in fact, the rear impact that was bigger and the one which pushed the Tata to underneath the truck, jammed!
