Toyota Fortuner to Legender Conversion: Detailed Cost Breakdown [Video]

The Toyota Fortuner is, hands down, the most sought-after ladder-on-frame SUV in India. Over the last few years, the prices of this SUV have reached above Rs 60 lakh, yet people are still buying it like it's a hot cake. Among the most popular variants of the Fortuner, the Legender is the one that everyone wants. However, as its price tag is over Rs 50 lakh, a lot of people are converting their old Fortuners into Legenders. Recently, a video has been shared online that provides all the pricing details of such conversions.

This video of the Toyota Fortuner Type-3’s conversion into a Legender has been shared on YouTube by Kunal Gahlot on their channel. It starts off with the owner of the shop mentioning that the owner of this 2019 Fortuner 4X2 automatic variant came to their shop for the Legender conversion job. He then starts showing the current condition of the vehicle.

He mentions that the front bumper of this vehicle is broken and has been kept in its place with screws. Apart from this, he adds that the rest of the body is in decent condition. After this, he starts talking about the parts that they will be adding to this 2019 Fortuner to convert it into the latest-shape Legender.

Upgrades and Pricing

Following the introduction, the owner of the shop mentions that they will be changing the front grille and front bumper, replacing the headlights, and also adding new LED DRLs and fog lights to give it the proper Legender appearance. Next, he adds that the rear bumper and taillights will also be replaced, and they will modify the rear spoiler to resemble the one on the Legender.

After this, he shows the completed project and then elaborates on the pricing of this conversion. The owner of the shop states that the exterior conversion, which consists of parts like the front and rear bumpers, LED headlights, and taillights, along with additional LED DRLs, costs Rs 85,000.

He added that this price also includes a paint match for the bumpers. The owner also highlighted that they provide a guarantee on their paint, and if the customer complains about any issue, they will repaint it. Next, he adds that, apart from these parts, the main highlight and most expensive part of this conversion are the Legender alloy wheels.

He stated that after exchanging old tires and alloy wheels, and depending on the condition of the new alloy wheels that are found, the cost of the Legender alloy wheels is between Rs 80,000 and Rs 1,10,000. Finally, the shop owner shows the fully custom interior of this particular Fortuner-to-Legender conversion.

He states that they offer Rs 15,000, Rs 20,000, and Rs 25,000 interior upholstery packages, and the owner of this vehicle has chosen the Rs 25,000 package. As part of it, the car gets perforated leather seats finished in the same red color as the Legender. It also gets red and black leather upholstery around the cabin to make it feel original.

Is It Legal?

The simple answer is no, it's not legal to convert a standard Fortuner into a Legender. Indian laws for motor vehicles prohibit any modification to the vehicle. So, if the person who converts their vehicle gets caught by the authorities, they can be fined, or their vehicle can be seized.

Now, if you ask whether it is worth converting an old Fortuner Type-3 into a Legender, then the answer is yes. This is simply because the new Legender is priced at Rs 50+ lakh, and today, a decent used 2019 Fortuner can be bought for half this price. So, even if a person spends around Rs 2-3 lakh on such a conversion with high-quality parts and craftsmanship, they can enjoy the fun of a Legender for half the cost.
