One of the most common modifications that we see on cars on the roads is aftermarket alloy wheels. A good set of alloy wheels will surely attract a lot of attention, and it also changes the overall look and stance of your vehicle. A good set of alloys will cost you good money, but just like in any case, there are cheaper alternatives available in the market too. While these cheaper wheels may look good to many, not all of them are durable or strong. Here we have one such incident from Punjab where a Toyota Fortuner lost control and rolled over at least six times because the aftermarket alloys on the SUV broke while in motion.

The video has been circulating on various social media platforms. In this video, we see a Toyota Fortuner that has rolled over six times on a busy road. The video also shows the reason for this crash clearly. We see an unbranded alloy wheel lying right next to the Fortuner which had crashed. The multi-spoke alloy wheel on this Fortuner was actually broken, and that is what caused the crash.

The alloy wheels look large, and it looks like the wheels were wrapped with low-profile tyres. It is not known whether the car was being driven at high speed before the incident. However, going by the statement in the video that says the car rolled over six times, we are assuming that the car was being driven at high speed.

While driving the car at high speed, it might have hit a pothole. The pothole might have damaged the wheels, which caused the accident. In the video, we see that the hub of the alloy wheel is missing. However, there is no visible dent on the alloy wheel itself.

This suggests that the wheel was likely constructed using cheap and brittle metal that could not withstand the stress placed upon it. In contrast, high-quality alloy wheels possess the ability to bend, preventing such accidents from occurring.

Installing an aftermarket wheel is not completely illegal in India. While you can alter the stock wheel size of a vehicle by a few inches, it is generally not a good idea to go for extremely large wheels which completely ruin the ride quality and handling of the vehicle. Such installations will also void the warranty on your suspension and other mechanical parts.

Apart from this, large wheels also show incorrect readings on the instrument cluster. As the circumference of the new, larger wheel and tyre differs from the stock version, the vehicle may display inaccurate information regarding speed and distance traveled. Although the margin of error remains small, it is greater than that of vehicles equipped with stock tyre sizes.

Installing such large and wide alloy wheels will also invite attention from the cops, and they can easily issue fines for such modifications. It is always a good idea to take your vehicle to a workshop or garage that deals in branded wheels for your and your vehicle’s safety.
